Songs you're silly for?

Does anyone have a song that, for some reason, they find themselves humming/singing from time to time? Mine is Waltzing Matilda…don’t know why, but it’s sooooo catchy… g’day mates
Dave

Geez Dave ! You mean that you’ve got it down to just one ? Seems like my entire repertoire goes flipping through my head on a pretty regular basis. Worst of all , I’ll be softly whistling along to one of my favorites and not realize it . That practice alone tends to get you some really wierd looks in checkout lines !

Have a Great Day and Fun Whistling !!

Silly Morris Dance tunes stick in my brain like Velcro.

Evil people could use this thread to plant bad sounds in peoples’ heads that are really hard to turn off! (…you see I’ve been through the desert on a horse with no name…).

So very sorry!

I often get Black Velvet Band stuck in my head… just the tune, not the words. I own maybe one recording of it and hardly listen to it so I have no idea where it comes from.

Prior to ANZAC Day I decided to learn, Eric Bogles Green Fields of France, AKA No Mans Land,
A wonderful balad,
I sang it at one of our regular bush dances,
But now the song just wont leave me, not that i have a problem with that, its a goodun,
You can hear it at this website

I’m partial to “Tie Me Kangaroo Down”, but I do like “Waltzing Matilda”, too.

One of my all time favs is “Rose of Alabama” Which always leads into “Banjo on my Knee” then I go off north to “Tenting Tonight” , “Camptown Races” And “Rubber Dollie” AKA “Sittin on top of the World”
Now look what you’ve gone and done, Dave…

Those are called “earworms,” when songs get stuck in your head.

I’ve always liked the term.

Oh my gosh… I just listened to The Green Fields of France… I’ll admit it, I have a tear in my eye. What a lovely ode to the fallen.
Dave

Pleased you liked it dave, eric bogle is a fine and inspiring composer, i bought one of his cd’s, the gift of years, the very best of Eric Bogle,
the song “the gift of years” brought a few tears to my eyes,
such is the power of words and music to touch the soul.
Regards
David

I get Hector the Hero stuck in my head alot for some reason. Probably cause it is one of the first things I learned on the whistle.

ITS A SMALL WORLD AFTER ALL, ITS A SMALL WORLD AFTER ALL,ITS A SMALL WORLD AFTER ALL,…

Eyes glaze over

Itchy Fingers by MacTalla Mór. It can be best described as some sort of Carribean-Celtic fusion.

Steel drums + uilleann pipes = fun!

EVERYTHING gets stuck in my head–both peices I’ve played and one’s I’ve only listened to. Fortunately, most of them go away after I haven’t played/heard them for a while. There are, however, some “usual culprets” that like to come back at regular intervals: “The Wars of Germany”, “Scotland the Brave”, “I Will Go”, and themes from The Lord of the Rings soundtrack.

Worse yet is all the poetry I inadvertantly memorize…

“We all live in a yellow submarine…” Probably my least-favorite Beatles song, but it’s always the one that gets stuck in my head. :imp:

Bogle writes great songs but, IMHO, it is there that his talent lies - not in the rendering of them vocally.

To get the best from Green Fields/No Man’s Land you need to go to Finbar Furey. The MP3 is on my car’s player. I can’t sing along because by the time it gets to “It all happened again, and again and again and again and again” I can’t get the words out for sobbing like a girl.

I saw Finbar sing it live last year and he struggles himself at that point. That’s the kind of total immersion in the song that has made that one Finbar’s in my opinion. I hope he does it in September when I see him in Dublin.

The Band Played Waltzing Matilda has , IMHO again, never been done better than by The Pogues. Shane’s voice has just the right balance of tragedy and anger.

And another Bogle song, Now I’m Easy, I reckon is best sung by old Ronnie Drew. Another real tear jerker. If Albert Camus were alive I think that one would be one of his favourites!
