I was looking on ebay today and check out what I found http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=16227&item=7300461865&rd=1
I always wanted an Oboe with whistle/Flute fingering. I might have to buy it.
That’s a Baroque oboe. Interesting… it may be one of those decisions that completely change the course of your life! ![]()
Or… Not! ![]()
Good luck and let us know.
Isn’t that a shawm? I dunno why he doesn’t call it that anywhere in the listing. I’ve seen people playing them at Rennfaires; if anyone wants to hear a decent player along with some great music, get something by the Carnival Band.
Seems like a reasonable pirce for such an instrument. I’ve noticed the maker’s name, Calmont, on a number of offerings - Irish flutes, whistles, etc. Anybody know anything about him or his work?
Roger
Calmont is a member of C&F and has responded to questions a few times.
I thought the simple double reed instruments didn’t play a perfect second octave. The single reed Zaphoon has this problem too. Perhaps it’s corrected by a conical bore… Anyone have the answer?
I think shawn (sp?) is an older version of this instrument (Rennaissance). This is a Baroque oboe.
Beauty!.. and very reasonable price.
I’ll bet you love it!
It looks a lot like a bombarde I bought on eBay a while back, except the bombarde is shorter and has a single key at the bottom. The double reed is very tricky and when you do get a sound, very loud.
Why mess with shawms and bombardes when there’s a real Oboe on eBay $559 buy it now… 5 hours left in the auction.

Thanks for the tip. I’ve always loved the sound of the oboe - now I’m lusting after yet another instrument I can’t play. The only thing keeping me from jumping on it is the sure and certain knowledge that any sound I could get out of it would be at best a squealing travesty of its beautiful voice.
Roger
Actually the way an oboe is made it will be a much quieter sound than a bombarde…that instrument isn’t named “bombarde” for nothing! I’m quite impressed with the sound that comes out of it. With the smaller bell and a smaller reed, an oboe is a much quieter instrument.

A shawm (sp?) has differnt fingerings than whistle and Flute so does a real Baroque Oboe and are in different keys and a Baroque Oboe i think had a few keys. I know I would be able to play it as I am a Bassoon player I know double reeds. A simple double reed instrument can overblow in fact us Bassoon players do it all the time because Mr. Bohem never got areound to making a new key arrangement for Bassoon only Flute, Clarinet, Oboe, and Sax also Bassoon have a just temperment where every other instrument is equal this creates intonation issues which we have to correct. I am low on cash and I moght not have enough to buy it maybe he’ll put up another one later.
