some tools for adjusting the bridle

“Hans, interested in your screw clamp idea for adjusting reeds.
A picture of this item would be useful if you could arrange to post one.
Thanks and best regards…Allen”

This little screw clamp is easy to get from any tool-supermarket round the corner. It is but tricky to use cause you have to hold clamp and reed in right position in one hand. It is but possible and the little clamp fits into any pipe case. Besides - us pipers are well trained in the art of fumbling, aren´t we? The little plate (red here) is essential to be out of plastic for the grip on the bridle. The plate does not turn (normally) but the wee screw alone. It helps to make a little curb into the plate - possibly with the edge of the file for your fingernails:

This one works better, but of course you want a small one and they are pretty hard to find. I got mine (~ 12 cms long) from ebay.Austria in the end. It is extremely important that the handle is twistable. The power has to come out of the wrist. The ones with a roll for the thumb are useless. The “twistable” ones are standard over here and are called “Franzose” (sic !). Is there a special word for these? When I inserted “monkey wrench” or “adjustable spanner” into ebay.com or ebay.uk I only found those with a roll.
Though it is a small one it is possibly better for the home than for the pipe-case, cause unless it is fixed properly it will damage your set:

This one is by far the best. Drawback: You can´t buy it. It is but easy to make. You even might find the (superglued onto the pliers) miniature clamp on ebay or a metal band can easily be bent and a tread be drilled into it. An old ramshackle pliers in a suitable size can be found with no problem and the tension of the rubber-ring that holds the reed is “adjustable” :

we all need a little " vice " once in a while

..what about just plain 'oul pliers w/teeth? they never slip. after you’ve done about 500 reeds you get the feel for how much finesse to use. also, they are very (no pun meant) tacktile, hands on, etc. kinda like how crowing a reed is important. for me, using a screw clap takes the feel out of the equation and enters in possible accidents.

…oh well…t’each their own…

I am very satisfied with this one that I had “made” only a few days ago: I sawed off the heads of two brass screws, superglued them onto a clamp (see pic) and opened the slits with a small triangular file. No more fumbling: “Preadjust” the clamp and insert the reed with the bridle into the clamp. It gets this hold before you can start screwing. Only twist a leetle bit each time, see what happens (should hardly be visible) and check it in the set to avoid going over the top.

This one is for opening only. For closing (wich takes much less force and is much less risky anyway) use the pliers. This clamp also seems beneficial to sound and perfomance (no longterm experiance yet), as it - though opening - squeezes the edges a bit.
