Some Nice Old Key Work

Here is some nice key work… This is a 9 key Rudall & Rose & Carte #6329 that I just finished renovating. Had to graft on a 2" piece of cocuswood on the upper section.
Does it look familiar Eilam? This Rudall is not as old as yours.

Here is a photo of the crown and foot cap.

what a beaut! good work jon!

Jon, there is a lot of similarities.
the fluted head and foot caps (mine are a bit different and visually i like them better)…the double touch on the Bb…the round seating on the bottom keys… are the sockets lined in silver?
do you think the embouchure was tinkered with? it seems a bit big?
how does it play?
nice work Jon, e.

actually, i just looked again and the Bb key is regular, what is the extra key?

e’‘’/d’‘’ trill key. Indispensable for playing the theme from the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

Nice ax!

Yes, it is the trill key that winds it’s way up the flute.
The sockets are silver lined, had to replace the barrel socket lining.
I think it is the original embouchure hole, there is another R&R&C here, with the same cut.
Plays good and strong, tuning is a little strange, but that is the way it is with some Rudalls.

does strange mean it plays in tune? :stuck_out_tongue:

Strange means it can be blown in tune… It has a flat foot, and the F# is 30cents flat, but what else is new? Now the Hawkes, that plays in tune, but I find the Pratten style flutes are more uninteresting then the R&R tone, that requires some effort. All in all it has come a long way since it came into the shop, in pieces!

Beautiful work, Jon. You can’t even see where it was grafted. Very nice looking flute.

Lyn

Very very pretty, that! It must be wonderful to get to work with so many fine instruments and see and feel the nuances that make each one unique … restoring works of art that are so very functional.
