Some Bass A whistle goodness (offshoot and continuation from the various "Come From Away" topics)

Didn’t want to continue going too far off topic from the previous threads where folks were looking for specific key whistles for use in CfA, so figured I’d start a new one here to keep it a little less cluttered.

Had a few folks now interested in these Bass A whistles, so thought I’d give it a shot and see how it went. Ended up needing to break out an old milling fixture and make some new pieces for it to accommodate the unusually large size PVC pipe needed for this one. It got to utilize some obscure machining methods that I had picked from some amateur astronomer forums where folks were making precision geared systems for being able to move their telescopes about.

This had been the piece I had to remake for my old fixture:

And this had been the finished setup showing the reason why I had to remake it:

And the final resulting whistle made using it:

Nice work! You make that reach look easy, but I’m still not sure I could pull it off. I think the whistle sounds great though and comes across as being well balanced too.

I may try some offset hole patterns at some point which would make it a bit easier for using the pinky fingers instead of the ring fingers for the lowest notes on each hand. Will take some extra fixturing though, these bad boys are looooooong.

Hey Alex. Sounds great! What diameters (ID/OD) are you using for the Bass A whistle?

It’s 1 inch nominal PVC pipe so roughly 1.315” OD and 1.049” ID
