Are ya gonna give up something you really like or chicken out and pick something you don’t actually care about? (Guess which option I choose.)
Never really got the idea of giving up something for Lent. Guess I’m not very religious.
Maybe I’ll give up shortening nicks for everyone on the board, except of course for Izzaryn_du.
I’m giving up religious observance. ![]()
I promise not to play Danny Boy the entire time.
Oddly enough, none of the people I know who always go on about “giving summats up fer Lent” are religious, and the ‘giving up’ normally lasts about as long as New Year resolutions.
This year I’m giving up pancakes. (After tonight I won’t be able to face them for weeks anyway.)
I’ve never done it. And as I believe I may be in the process of seguing from lifelong Presbyterian to Unitarian, I’ll have to wait and see whether UU’s are into that, but I expect not.
I recall Redwolf giving up posting here for Lent one year. She stuck to it too.
I’m thinking of giving up broccoli, but my wife is not being supportive.
Ah, in that case I’m giving up humour and Jello pudding.
So, you’ll only be watching American comedies, then? (Since they contain humor, not humour.)
Oh, you beat me to it. ![]()
I thought you did that already! ![]()
I’m giving up posting to off-topic threads. Yeah, right.
Okay, then really I’m giving up lusting after Bloomfield. … Yeah, right.
Okay, then really I’m giving up …well, everything is just so important to me… I guess I’ll just stick with all of it! ![]()

I’ll try not to fart so much… Don’t think I can abstain completely ![]()
I used to give up the internet entirely during Lent for various reasons (and it was a good discipline too…hard to do!). I haven’t done that for the past couple of years, however, because I’m a moderator on another board and I don’t like to leave them in the lurch.
This year I’ll be doing a dawn to dusk fast, with only liquids during the day and one small meal in the evening. Food is a major compulsive issue with me, so that will be a good discipline too. Also, as a family, we will be praying the office of Compline nightly before bed.
Lenten observance is an offering, so there’s really no reason for someone who isn’t religious to do it. There’s really no compulsion to do it at all…as my old rector used to say: “All may, some should, none must.” I find it beneficial, personally, but that’s me. ![]()
Redwolf
I’m going to give up being so nice to other people.
I was going to say that I’m giving up doing rolls and playing jigs, but since I don’t really play them anyway yet (yes, I’m a wimp, just don’t tell anyone), it seems rather pointless.
I am seriously considering (seriously) giving up coffee. For ME, giving up something that is important is a good thing. I’ve done it a few times, but by Easter I’m dying. I’m still not sure about that one. Ask me tomorrow if I ended up doing it
I AM giving up ice cream, which I love, and I’m also going to limit my internet. The latter will be hardest. What will you all do without me? ![]()
I used to give up coffee when I was in college, because it was such an addiction for me. I never did manage to successfully give up on all caffeine though…the headaches were killer!
Redwolf
The headaches only last for a couple of days, but since I tend to be very SNARKY when I give it up, my family insists that I have tea instead. I really only drink a cup or two a day of coffee anyway, I just really love the taste. I could drink it all day, even if it’s decaf. And substituting tea is so hard because it just doesn’t have that edge to it. Yum…I’m thinking of making a pot now, since I may just be giving it up tomorrow! ![]()
NOOOO!!! But if you do, I call dibs on the better half of The Brain! (if we ever get it back from Fly Guy)
I couldn’t give up coffee…coffee is a necessity, not a luxury. I want to have kids someday, but I really dread the fact that I would have to at least cut down on the caffeine during pregnancy.
I am giving up chips, since I’ve been eating them pretty much every day recently and I know they are not good for me…I love Lent, because it gives you an extra push to make changes for the better in your life.
I have friends that are not religious that still give things up for Lent, just in the spirit of making positive life changes.
