Single jigs and Slides

This is a subject that I’ve been trying to come to grips with for the longest time. For the life of me, I can’t distinguish between single jigs and slides. Can someone point out how I might hear what separates them? To add to the confusion, I have more than once encountered recordings of ‘slides’ that sure sounded like polkas to me. :boggle:

Thanks for any input.

A slide is a single jig played at a fast pace suitable for a style of dancing that is particularly associated with County Kerry. Sometimes they’re played so fast that the 4x3 rhythm just sounds like a 4-beat rhythm that’s quite close to the 2x2 rhythm of a polka, but there is always a subtle difference, more evident if the pace is slowed down.

Maybe someone who knows more than I do about either dancing or music theory could put it more elegantly.

Thanks, Roger. I have suspected that it may have more to do with how the tune is danced. I’ve also heard it said that the phrasing of a slide is 8 bars where a single jigs’s phrasing is 4. Sometimes it gets blurry, though, and that’s why my question arose. Guess I gotta tweak my ears.
