Have any of you ever played a Silkstone Low D whistle? How did it compare with others like Chieftain, Burke, and Overton? I want to buy a nice low whistle, but I don’t know what make I should get. The only lows I’ve played are Susatos.
Hey
Sorry I can’t help you with your question, but I have one for you: how do you like the low D susato?? It’s cheaper than others so I wanted to get it, but I would pay more money for another whistle if the susato isn’t that great. Thanks!
(oh… my friend has a reg. silkstone D and it sounds nice and is pretty nice to play; I’m assuming the same quality would go into the low whistle…sorry I can’t help more!)
Since I haven’t played other low whstles, I can’t make a a relative assessment, but I will say that the Susato Low D is definitely a good bargain. It has a nice warm sound, lots of volume in both octaves, and never gets shrill or unpleasant in the upper octave. Really the only thing I don’t particularly like abot it is that it does have a distinctly plastic sound to it, being made of ABS. But if you don’t mind that, then go for it. You certainly can’t find better quality for such an affordable price! Oh, if you do decide to purchase one, make sure to get the tunable model. Since Susatos ARE manufactured, the default tuning isn’t always perfect.
So do I…which is why I was asking about the low D. If the quality of the low D is anything like that of the Silkstone soprano alloy D, then I’ll definitely get it! ![]()
I played the silkstone low D several years ago
and was unimpressed, FWIW. Maybe they’ve
changed since then and it’s just my opinion
anyway.
I haven’t posted this yet but I am selling a Susato Low D. It is in ivory color with some nice Celtic engraving. It also has a key added for the low D note for any worrys about the reach. Nice tone as well. This lists for $117. I’m selling for $85 + 5 for S& H. PM if interested.
PS I will be out of the country 7/6 - 7/15
