Silkstone Alloy Low D Opinions?

Hello everyone–
I am considering purchasing an Alloy Low D from Silkstone, but before I do, I wish to see if anyone around here has any first hand experience with them.
I had the chance to play an Alloy Soprano D from Silkstone, which I enjoyed very much. Is the Low D as impressive a whistle?

Thanks for your help

Well, since no one else has helped you out (and because my life won’t be complete unless I reach 1000 posts before Bloomfield), I’ll say this:

I have a Silkstone Alloy Soprano D that I was given as a gift, and I really like that whistle - it’s clog proof, plays well, is in tune and has good volume, without being earsplitting. The Silkstone Low D I tried however didn’t move me at all - The tone, playability, feel…they just didn’t work for me, which I found surprising because I was expecting a bigger version of the Soprano whistle…but alas no, it isn’t so.

In the end I always come back to the Overton Low D. I like the Copeland too, although it’s a completely different beast. If for some reason neither of those suit you, I’d suggest the Burke Low D’s - the sound and features are similar to the Silkstone (Fully linded windway, aluminum, tuning slide, O-rings, etc.) but I feel the Burke Low D’s play better and have superior intonation.

Just my opinion, YMMV.

Loren

I own a Silkstone Low D and like Loren was surprised that it was not quite like the large version of the soprano D that I expected it would be. However I got used to the difference rather quickly and now regard it as my favorite Low D. The timbre is more subdued than my other Low D whistles (Copeland, Overton, Howard, Dixon) and it has more chiff than it’s little brother. But what I really like about this whistle is that it has by far the best balance, breath pressure-wise, between the octaves. Also it takes less breath pressure than other Low Ds. Once I got used to this I found that it played more like a regular soprano whistle between the octaves and is quite responsive. It is better suited for playing fast tunes than any other Low D I own. So there is my 2 cents worth. YMMV.

Cheers,
David
