  1. I’ve seen it masterly done by a local sessioner, with the tap (C#) using the pinky half-blocking the whistle tip (high whistle of course).

I just can’t get enough speed from this idle finger to play it fast enough, but it does sound better than my poor would-be-crans :frowning:

  1. Alternately, there’s the Silkstone “D+” whistle with an extra C hole. I tried it… but it didn’t help much my sluggish pinky.

I do basicaly a short cran. Same as a cran but without sounding the D first. Same concept as the short roll on other notes. The pinky thing is intriging. I’ll have to give it a try.

Hmm…I guess that’s a short crann, isn’t it? Sort of. I use it myself sometimes.

I don’t know how it would work on whistle, but I expect it would do just fine.

I definitely don’t have big enough fingers to play middle C# on the whistle… And I play an Overton, primarily, which is a somewhat wide bore.

I actually have an Overton D/C whistle, which means it has two extra holes - a small one below D, for playing C… and a small one in the back, for creating an F natural. I technically COULD play a roll on D with that instrument, but I haven’t learned yet. It’s hard 'cause I’m left-handed and play with right hand on top, and the C at the bottom is set slightly to the right.
Dammit.
