Shantalla--Have you heard of them?

Hi, and Merry Christmas!

Since Avanutria brought up Lunasa (yes, I have heard them!) I thought I would ask you wonderful people what you think of a band I discovered last night: Shantalla. I am enthralled by their energy and presentation in their music. It’s very exciting to listen to them! I can’t get enough!

Has anyone seen them in Holland or Belgium performing? Musically, what do you all think of their performance of the Irish Trad music?
Would they be termed as “Progressive Trad” as well?

Their website is http://www.shantalla.com. They have a couple of tunes (MP3) for download there and I’d love to hear what you all think of them!

Thanks for your honest opinions.

I think they’re great instrumentally, awesome, “Cam ye all frae France”, thing. The singer doesn’t have that pretty of a voice. She sounds a little flat and harsh to my ears. They are sposed to have a second CD out soon.I really love their arrangements and instrumentation, though. TTFN, Phiz

Hi Phiz,

Great to hear that you like Shantalla as well!

I, too, like the “France” arrangement. But the one that really gets me going is the set which starts with “Sean Se Cheo” – if you want to hear some extreme, high-energy, awesome whistling, fiddlin’, piping, and strummin’–heartpounding action, check it out! What a terrific cut! Absolutely tight!

I like Helen Flaherty’s vocals–I like the old world accent and flair she brings to the music.

I agree with you on the great instrumental arrangements! “Rocky Road to Cashel” , and the set “The Woods Of Old Limerick/McGreavy’s/Meghan’s Reel/The Piper On Horseback” are quite nice.

This Belgian band is extremely talented and have been seen sharing the stage with Altan, Dervish, and more. They’ve been acclaimed as the top traditional band on the European continent by The Irish Voice.

Does anyone else here care for their music as much as Phiz and I do?

All the best,

–KR
