I keep thinking about this. What comes to mind especially is the seemingly universal avidity of late for photography (I know it’s not quite the same thing as video recording, but not by far: I’ll be polite and play the game, but in truth I absolutely hate having photos taken of me, for example; videos, same thing). Time was I would have thought that someone taking a pic of his or her lunch was a tad on the odd and “desperately having nothing better to do” side, but now that it’s become almost a commonplace I see it as a general enthusiasm for the world around one and to be honest I find this current and widespread esthetic of minutiae rather charming.
As for my end of the deal: if I’m gonna be cool with perpetually being a potential subject, I must find a way to think of myself as, well, basically no different than a sandwich.
► Ria: [to Chev] “You are my shiny lunch box.” (from the movie Crank: High Voltage)
► There are various pics touching on the theme either wholly or in part but for some reason I can only find copyproof stuff. Plus a bunch of mention on MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, bleh. Must be bigger than I’d’ve thought.
I don’t really know, either. And I frequent knowyourmeme.com…
It’s probably one of those deals where an amusing movie line
takes on a life of its own through overquoteage. A few years
ago it was “I drink your milkshake!”
Pre-Internet examples include “Jane, you ignorant slut!” and
“We are the nights who say ‘Ni!’”
I wonder how a ‘no videoing pub’ would fare commercially ? Some ‘no smoking ones’ did OK in the ‘old days’.
“Sorry folks, do you mind not videoing, it makes some people feel uncomfortable
and others may have told the boss they were going to great-aunt Ethel’s funeral”
