Seattle, March 2004: Friday Harbor Irish Music Camp

The Friday Harbor Irish Music Camp will be held in Friday Harbor, Washington, which is on San Juan Island. Classes will be given on March 24, 25, 26 and 27, with a concert that night and a farewell breakfast on Sunday morning. The camp is located at the University of Washington Marine Lab Facility, which is located on the waterfront one-half mile from the town of Friday Harbor.

The camp is held on beautiful San Juan Island, Washington and features music classes, concerts, dances, sessions, and carrying on, in the spirit of Co. Clare’s “Willie Week”. It’s in a lovely setting, right by the water with a view of Friday Harbor and the ferry boats. The town has been very hospitable to us and has been a great place for sessions.

2004 Faculty:

James Kelly - fiddle
Randal Bays - fiddle
Catherine McEvoy- flute and whistle
John Williams - accordion, concertina, whistle
Dáithí Sproule - guitar
Eoin O’Neill - bouzouki
Maldon Meehan- Irish Set Dancing

This promises to be one of the best Irish music camps ever, and the cost, including tuition, lodging, and most meals is only $550, with a $35 discount if paid in full by December 31st. The cutoff date for full payment is Feb. 14. To keep class sizes small, enrollment will be limited, so register early.

Tuition for the camp without room and board is $300. Individual class tickets will be available. There are several B&B’s and hotels in nearby Friday Harbor, as well as a campsite that is about 5 miles from the camp.

Wow, James Kelly, Randall Bays, Dáithí Sproule? Nice line-up. I was just listening to my old tapes of James Kelly, Paddy O’Brien, and Terrance O’Reily the other day.

Hey, where’s Stanley Greenthal, Mark Minkler, The old Artichoke guys, even David Daye, and of course Carol (?) the red haired Irish claw hammer banjo player, and all the other musicians from Orcas? Are they all still up there in that neck of the woods? I use to hang out with that gang at “Fiddle Tunes” at Ft. Warden, in Pt Townsend…Centrum.

Are beginners welcome, or is it better if you’ve played a while?

Caroline

That sounds awesome!

I have very fond memories of Friday Harbor, having spent some time in their cabins and dorm and one time even in one of the apartments on the campus. It really is a nice place to spend some time. Anyone who gets to go to this event is really fortunate!

Just don’t eat the giant oysters…take it from someone who tried one…

:astonished:

And pack a raincoat…

I’m looking forward to Friday Harbor…several of the session players here in Seattle said they had a blast there last year.

I’m 90% sure I"m going to this thing. Anybody else on the forums thinking of going? It looks like alot of fun and I’d love for another chance to study under Catherine! I’d love to meet some of you there. The only thing that scares me about this camp is everybody looks to be on the older side of things and I"m not sure I could handle it. Eldarion might be meeting me there but aside from him there needs to be an infusion of young people. HINT HINT AZALIN, AVA, ENERGY! And Az, be sure to bring along Joyce  And even if you’re aren’t on the “younger” side of things like Bloomy and my favorite fiddling Englishmen. If the money and timing is right I’d love to see both of you guys drag your arses out to Seattle for the festivities. Thanks for the link Ava, and even if you don’t make it up there maybe we can meet up while i’m in Seattle.

I’d like to go but I don’t know if I’ll be able to afford it. Maybe I’ll do the day-class-and-commute thing, I dunno. But we’ll definitely get together for some tunes if I’m still living in the area.

My best buddy from Calgary want last year and he just raved about it (he’s going again). I’d go if I had the bucks…(and not of Oranmore, nyuk nyuk)
