Sean Reid's pipes

A friend of mine asked me this morning “what ever happened to Sean Reid’s pipes…?”

I told him I had no clue but I’d ask on this forum… I did a search of this forum and someone stated that LOF is currently playing them. Can anyone confirm this - and the maker? Thanks.

This same friend has a David Quinn Practice Set from 1978 – with a dead reed. He pulled it out of a box that probably hadn’t seen light for 25 odd years… that’ll do it. I found him a reed that works fairly well in the chanter (its a damn nice looking chanter). We’ll have to get JES to make him a reed for it when JES is back in action.

He said that when he was staying with Sean Reid for a week in 77’ or so — Sean told him that Sean’s chanter was a bitch for other pipers to play because the tone holes were set differently or something – is this a case of fuzzy memories or…

In any event, I’d appreciate any information y’all have to offer.

Thanks

As far as I know Sean Reid owned several sets of pipes in his lifetime. He tended to loan them to various pipers. Willie Clancy has a loan of a Rowsome concert pitch set which is now with Liam O’Flynn. There was also the Colgan B set which Jimmy O’Brien-Moran now has. I don’t know if either LOF or JOBM own these sets or if they still belong in some way (trust, foundation, etc) to the estate of Sean Reid.

Thanks PJ!

My guess is that Seán himself would have relied on trust.

But his generosity continues to provide inspiration even in our more formalised era: http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=125375085&blogID=298265848
