Rubber bag

Hi all, well, here I´am again, I´m planning to make a bag for my SSP out of a truck wheel´s inner tube, I found that cold vulcanization cement welds the rubber very well and both parts of the bag edges would become as one.
Does anybody had the experience with this kind of bags?
Is there any elasticity in this though rubber that allows pressure and pich variations?

Thanks for any help

Marcelo

Apparently, Paddy Keenan’s father once made him a bag from an inner-tube.

Hi Marcelo:

I wouldn’t recommend it, though it can be made to work. trouble is, sometimes you need to quickly reduce pressure, and the rubber can make that very difficult.

For a synthetic bag, construct one out of vinyl and marine cement… or whatever that stuff is. I’ve been meaning to make a few bags myself but am still uncertain what that cement is and where I can obtain it… I know, I know, run a frickin’ search…

I´ve made several bags all of vinyl, the first glued with contact cement (I don´t know if it´s what you call marine cement) totally leaky cause the contact cement glues but doesn´t seal; the other bags also vinyl but glued with silicon rubber (UHU brand) excellent result except if the air reaches the seam. In that case I would season it with transparent roof terrace sealant (Plavicon brand in my country, but I haven´t tryed yet.
Joseph, Can you send me some information about that marine cement and it´s properties.

According to David Daye, the best glue for naugahide bags is 3M FAST 5200 in red-and-white tubes

I have made vinyl bags using regular 3M 5200 Marine Adhesive. It takes about a week to cure. The 3M 5200 fast is 24 hour cure time.
3M 5200 regular costs around $5 for a 3 fl oz tube in the Marine section of Walmart.
As far as the vinyl goes- get the lighter Marine vinyl. The first bag I made was from heavier vinyl and it does not have enough “give” for my liking. David Daye uses the lighter Marine vinyl. He glues a second layer on the area of the bag where the bellows and drone stocks are attached for reinforcement.

Eugene Lambe used to make bags out of a kind of rubber that according to him was used for lining watertanks. The bags were big and heavy after viny and leatherette l bags. I never looked back once I changed to a leather bag.

Thanks gents, that’s the stuff I was looking for… 3M Fast 5200!!! I might have to make a couple of bags today.

That’s what David Daye told me he use’s and I’ve used it ever since…Good stuff..

Thanks to all of you guys! you´re the best.
Looks like UHU silicon and 3M 5200 FAST are the same (at last I get the concept of “marine cement”) both cures in 24hs.

The 3M FastCure stuff only (if memory serves) comes in white, so be careful, it is smeary. I believe they have the color black in the slow cure.

Also, isn’t it the 4200 fast cure stuff? I couldn’t find the 5200 in a fast cure. Gonna try my hand at making a fake bag. I’m tired of using my wife’s and a spare bag sure does come in handy when making batches of reeds.

I bought one of Eugenes bags in 1980 or so and to this day it is still airtight, bellows and rubber bag. He did a wonderful job and the bag reacts fine.

Can you post a pic of both bag 'n bellows?
