 That’s what I want for christmas! (Argh! it’s february!!)

I’ll take that Rudall on the left of the cover!

AAARGH! Casey is trying to steal my Rudall!!!

Thanks Terry.

emailed the author for details; also fyi, that publisher carries the new langwill index… they’re charging 200 pounds though; amazon has it for $150.

cheers,
eric

Eric, Bingham has plain copies of New Langwill for £60 - it’s only the presentation/library leather-bound edition that’s £200!

I can’t see the new Bigio Rudall book on Bingham’s website yet, though… and I believe (sure I saw mention somewhere) that there will be a significantly cheaper paperback edition in due course. I want it… and I’m patient.

amazon.com/uk have the Langwill for 57 sterling just now. I got mine for 40 odd quid a couple of years ago from the site

I wonder if Bigio’s tome has much information about the firm’s simple system flutes before Carte turned up in 1850? Terry says there were few eight key flutes made after 1870, so that’s still a 20 year period were simple system flutes were made after Carte joined the firm. It say’s there are numerous photographs of flutes, even simple system, and flutes by other makers. Looking forward to the book

yeah, i think i might pony up for the expensive edition, because i want the color photos. the only thing better than looking at pictures of flutes is trying them.

i think i will go for the cheaper Langwill though. just looking for the newer edition? or is '93 the newest edition?

steampacket, it’s out of stock at that price… :frowning:

cheers,
eric

Here is a short article that Robert Bigio wrote for the National Flute Association Flutist Quarterly. See beginning page 18.

I’ve received my copy and after a couple hours with it, it’s outstanding research.
The writing is a bit too academic for an easy read, but the information is there.

I appreciated a lot of what Robert found historically about the men, much of it I’d run into myself and had on the website – and removed because of all the fraudsters stealing photos to “sell” flutes and idle rummaging going on – but there’s a huge amount of information Robert tireless trolled across the continent to find.

I especially liked the information about Rudall’s lawsuit against the man having an affair with his wife. Lovely stuff.

Many of the photos are of flutes not in the catalogue. Small wonder, really, since so many people guard what they have for one reason or another. Bigio’s research unearthed a few nuggets that make for dandy eye candy and amusing fodder for discussion.

The book is pricey, but I suspect in the end is worthy of a spot on the shelf of any serious fluter/researcher.

don’t look for too much on the 8key years, though. It’s scant – for good reason. Much of the “big time” flute stuff they did was post-Carte, and that’s precisely where the bulk of the book sits.

But it’s by no means exhaustive. Many many nuggets are left to be uncovered out there.
