Thanks, Denny, I did notice all of that, but the shipping charge turned out to be 13 euros for a total of 38 Euros, or a total of $50.78. I was expecting the shipping to be cancelled on the final payment screen, as per Hammy’s comment here.

I received the paypal credit from Hammy for the shipping expense. Thanks for that. I did receive the handbook today, but before I could even open the package, my wife took it away, wrapped it, and put it under the tree. I guess that I will have to wait a few days to report further.
I had a similar experience with my father-in-law. He brought back a couple of Dizi from China when he was there last. When he was here last weekend he handed me the package and said, “Don’t open it until Christmas.” Seriously! You hand me something that I’m super excited about and tell me not to open it for a week or so.

My wife got me this book as a Christmas present and I can’t recommend it highly enough. There can’t be many players who wouldn’t benefit from getting their hands on this book - a wealth of information! Don’t delay, buy it today

I can’t tell from first hand experience, but i will get Cónal’s book as well.
My experience so far with tutorials is that, even if they’re quite similar they often offer interesting second opinions/alternatives.. maybe that ‘aha!’ you never quite grasped from the first one.
I am not saying this is the case here, merely that i have been there before re. tutor books/DVD’s
I agree with Mr Blackwood, buy them both. I don’t have the O’ Grada book but it seems to be a tutor while the Hamilton book is a handbook with tutor section, it has great info on history, maintenance, repair etc - it’s a really great book and well worth the money!
For me these two books are very complimentary. I read them both back-to-back last night on a flight to Dublin and I didn’t find them redundant. Of its 212 pages, Hammy’s book does include a 37 page playing tutor section titled “Learning to play the flute in the Irish Tradition.”. Conal’s book is a more expansive playing tutor.
I am a relative newcomer to the flute so having some of the basics discussed from two different perspectives was additive for me. Hammy’s book has lots of history, theory, and science to ground the reader as he presents applied topics of playing and flute maintenance. You can enjoy his book in an armchair.
Conal’s book is more like sitting in a lesson with him, you’ll immediately want to have a flute in hand and the sound files ready starting at page 1.
After reading the books I came away with a swag that since these guys both live in the same small town they probably know each other well enough, and since his book was preceded by Hammy’s original by 20yrs, Conal would have written his book to not just be a rehash of what Hammy had already covered. He does have his own ideas and experience to share and obviously teaches a lot.
FWIW - my wife took to Conals book faster than Hammy’s. She has been eager to learn technique so she dived into that one. I did just the opposite because I like the background and the reasoning things are the way they are.
