OK…So I’ve got a Reyburn low D with the delrin head, I think it’s the regular not the big head model, and I love it. Nice intonation, great tone, my band mates like it (first low D I’ve tried I can say that about), comfortable in my hands (being older than dirt, I have some issues) but thinking of adding something different. Not a replacement mind you just another voice.
Considering the Reyburn alloy low D, but only if there’s enough difference to matter.
Anyone compared both…Panceltic? If anyone has it’s you.
That’s just what I was hoping to find…don’t know how I missed it when I did my search. I guess the goggle stars just weren’t aligned with Jupiter and Mars, oh jeez, I think I’m having flashbacks. Can you get flashbacks from Guinness?

I have both the brass and alloy models. Neither are the big head model. I like them both. Each has a different voice. I even sold my MK when I got the Reyburn. They have everything I want from a low D, tone, volume and tuning.
Ordered yesterday, immediate confirmation from Ronaldo, so I figure 6-8 weeks, or longer, like most others…today I get a message it’s shipping today!

I can’t add too much to what Feadoggie and Panceltic Piper have already said but in direct comparison to the brass Reyburn I’ve been playing for a while the Alloy version just has more balls.
Louder yes, but more than that, it’s a fuller sound, especially in the bottom end. You can really lean on the bottom notes.

PiperJoe, you just happened to order when I had a head and body ready to go thus the quick delivery. Normally a couple of weeks… and I’m very happy you really like the Alloy Low D.
After spending time alternating between the two I agree 100%. There’s no question that they’re both Reyburns, but each has a unique personality. I’m now wondering if there are subtle differences in design, or if it’s just brass vs. alloy? Ronaldo?
Either way, I’m definitely keeping (and lovin’) both.
Piperjoe, yes there are subtle differences between the two designs. The use of the thicker wall of the aluminum allows for some variation in the fipple design. The airway and window dimensions are identical so it’s not about that. I’ve read here by others that the material used is not a big factor, but I disagree. I believe the density of the material over which the airstream oscillates does affect the tone which is why the aluminum alloy version sounds the way it does compared to the brass version.
There is also the factor that, due to the thicker wall, the fingers don’t protrude into the bore as much as the thinner wall of the bass version. I’m not sure how much this actually affects the playability of the instrument, but I’m guessing it has to have some affect.
Interesting…due to complications of diabetes I play the low D with my finger tips, hence the offset finger hole option. Because I’m using my finger pads/tips my fingers might be protruding farther into the tone hole than those folks who use the more common piper’s grip.
We go through Ashland once or twice a year on our way to visit our kids in Gig Harbor. It might be fun to get together and play around with this. Not sure to what end, but in any event, I’d love to meet my maker, that didn’t come out exactly as I intended, but I’m sure you get my intent.
