Reworked Pakistani Sets??

Here’s one for the pipemakers:

What exactly is involved in reworking a Pakistani set?

In other words, if one were to buy a Pakistani set and have it “reworked” would it end up cheaper than having a set made from scratch?

well, I looked into that very question when looking to purchase my full set. Turns out that Tim Britton has a ‘system’ of sorts where he deals with the same set all the time and knows what needs to be done.

that specific model sells at www.silverbushmusic.com for $2000 and somewhat cheaper other places. Tim’s price is $2600. His site says the wait is estimated to be a month or two. I waited four, but that’s still pocket change and no time for a fully functioning full set.

I can see that the three-keyed chanter has had almost if not every hole filled in and redrilled, I’m presuming to work properly with one of Tim’s reeds (which it does) instead of the original “mystery reed.” I have been unable to determine whether or not it has been rebored, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it has. My guess is the least satisfactory part of the whole thing as originally designed were the regulators, but there’s not much that can be done for moving holes there. Mine work fine with the plastic reeds from MidEast.

I’ve had to do some further work on it to get it working really right (although it was playable when it left Tim’s shop).

I have written an article about getting the set up to spec that I submitted to An Píobaire, but it’s not in the issue that arrived today. If people are interested, I could post the text of it on this board, but I won’t waste everybody’s time if nobody really cares.

Instead of posting it on the board, perhaps emailing or PM-ing the article might be a better thing to do. I, for one, would like to read it.

Submitting interesting and on-topic material is always a welcome use of bandwidth.

OK, this doesn’t read as I intended it to read… instead: ‘If you are uncomfortable with posting it on the board, perhaps doing so by email or PM might suit’ is what I intended to say… time for my medication…again:blush:

Antaine, I think all of us would be very interested in this topic.

cool, i’ll give it a new thread

Yea, a rebuilt chanter does require some reamer work…
