regulators

can anyone who can play the pipes progress to play the regulators? do you have to train your mind to do carry out contrary actions simultaneously?

Seanny mind o’er matter or in this case o’er regulators. They are not contradictory movements at all but complimentary movements in harmony with the chanter. So having established that ,you can indeed play them.Start off perhaps by playing one chord only and when you are confident at that start having some real fun by experimenting it will come together with time and practice. Also try and play one or two at a time,if you play three together chances are you will drown out the chanter and of course use more air.Enjoy.

There is a good article on

Thanks, danepiper for the link. It’s been a while since I visited Patrick DArcy’s pages.

Excellent article on the regs, well written.

Those So. California pipers are lucky to have such an informative web site. It’s got to be one of the best around. Enjoyed reading all about the recent gathering with Robbie Hannan…and great photo gallery, Patrick. Hat’s off to you!

Hi Lorenzo,

Thanks very much  We had a fabulous time with Robbie and he seemed to be able to squeeze some fun out of his four days here aswell! I wouldn’t wish that trip on anyone… Belfast/London/Los Angeles and back again four days later… but he was a trooper and held up fabulously.

We are making the tionól an annual event so stand by for one later next year!

As far as regulators go you need to hear Peter Laban playing! He has a great touch on the regs.

All the best for now,

Patrick.

Stop it right there D’Arcy. This is embarrassing.

Peter has an excellent recording on “Clips and Snips” though that part of the forum now has a new link, if I remember right. The sound files are all still there though, and I might add, Patrick is being very modest.

A very fine tune that An Bhean Tinceara…
Could one be lucky to get some respons to find the abc or notes from the tune. I have tried chambers tunefinder without result.

Ole.

Ole,
There’s Willie’s version in “The Dance Music of Willie Clancy”, probably the best route! Pretty much a “must have” I think.
Cheers
Alan

The tune “An Bhean Tinceara” mentioned by danepiper can be heard on this new link for “Clips and Snips” under “Non Whistle”

I opt for the middle of the road approach , that is , to just play the regulators when it is as easy , “asy” , as letting your hand drop down on the note you want to play , without distracting from the chanter work , or , the tune itself. The other approach , is to have at it all at once with a full set . but here in the states that can be a hassel since if the pipes go out of tune it does not sound good and that takes all the joy out of it . Many good pipers have given up since the set can become unmanageable so easily , from the start. I see it as best to warm up the set , for 10 min or so till the reeds have a chance to adjust to being out of the box.
A reedmakers tip , the reed is not finished when it is tied on , tuned and chopped , it is finished when the player has played the reed . Or , there are no good reeds , we only learn to play the bad ones . t.k. .

Hi Gang,

I think you referred to the Yellow Tinker there Lorenzo, that’s a different although excellent tune too. This is the Tinkers Wife I think it’s in John Walsh’s Pipe Friendly Tunes??? I’ll look it up tonight in both DMWC and PFT’s.

Bye bye,

Patrick.

Just found this on JC’s Tune Finder:

http://trillian.mit.edu/~jc/cgi/abc/gettune?F=GIF&U=http://home.capecod.net/~zouki/webabc/tuv.abc/200994.abc&X=200994&T=TINKERSWIFE&N=TinkersWife.gif

B flat note in there too… YUM YUM!

Patrick.

Okay kids… I loooked up An Bhean Tincéara in the Dance Music of Willie Clancy. He plays it in D… (thank goodness)… replace the first triplet DEF in the transcription with EFG and that’ll get you on the right track.

Gluck!

Patrick.
