Its a shame more people don’t tune and work their regulators better. I can well see why some eschew them altogether. But if you listen to Ronan Browne’s album “The Wynd You Know” you will come to understand what regs are supposed to sound like. His version of the Lament for the Wild Geese is still the best use of regs I’ve ever heard anywhere.
Your right Djm. When I was at the New Zealand Tionol last year I got to play a really well set up and tuned set; and it was a hybrid set by the way. The McKenzie regulators where tuned perfectly and because of this you could achieve some interesting chord structures. This encouraged me to learn how to play and tune them properly. Doc Jones If your interested in CD’s with regulator playing on them I’d recommend Mikie Smyths album, ‘The Wild Keys’.
Apart from accompanying the melody, the regulators should also complement the rhythm of the tune. Jerry O’Sullivan is one of the best I’ve heard in this regard.
