Reconfiguring my Low D

Anyone out there have any suggestions on how to change my PVC low d to a side blown flute? Are there specific measuremnts that should be adhered to? It’s made here in Denver by John(something). The brand is, “Black Spruce”. Thanks in advance. Phizzie

Are there specific measuremnts that should be adhered to?

Hi Phizzie,

Measurements to these instruments are very specific indeed!
Your Low D was made as a whistle, and thus has a fipple.
The sideblown flute is closed on one end and should have an embrochure hole. If you would close/cut off the fipple end the tube would be much shorter (higher tone) and the toneholes would be offset proportionally.

I can’t think of a way this can be done.

There are some instructions of the net for making a PVC flute. Haven’t tried it yet, but looks good to me: http://www.cwo.com/~ph_kosel/designs.html

Is the headjoint on your Low-D removeable?
If so, simply make a flut headjoint for it.
If not, you could cut off the whistle headjoint, round the inside edges of the pipe to prevent the airflow from being tripped and use a PVC coupler to switch between the two.
