Build Question

Hi all

A few questions regarding building whistles:

Would it be possible to put a Susato head on PVC body to make a different keyed whistle? I have a Susato Low D and was wondering if I were to cut a blank for a Low F/A/Bb and then put the Susato Low D head on it if it would work. Im currently in the process of making some PVC flutes is why I ask.

thanks,

  1. Yes, to a large extent this will work, though there are tuning considerations involved in having non-proportional bore size. There are plenty of web sites that discuss ‘optimum’ bore size, and how your hole spacing has to change in order to compensate for bores wider or narrower than ‘optimum’ (optimum being essentially arbitrary, based on what ‘most people’ think sounds best; you may like a narrow or wide bore sound).

  2. Whistle questions belong on the whistle board.

  3. To make it somewhat on topic, the same applies to applying a head to a flute, with the caveat that the internal sculpting of flute heads can have a -huge- effect on both tuning and tone.
