I am an ex competing Highland piper and also play Scottish smallpipes. I am considering getting a set of Uilleann Pipes but I am unsure which maker to go to. I live in central Scotland and would be grateful if anyone could recommend a reputable maker in Britain or Ireland. ![]()
Welcome to the forum, Geo!
This is an oft-asked question, and most people around the Uillean Pipe community (all thirty of us) are reluctant to openly state who’s a better pipemaker than others. However, check this link
http://www.uilleannobsession.com/
Patrick’s site has lots and lots of information, as well as a list of makers in the ‘links’ section. Quite a few are from your side of the pond. Most of them have websites, and are often available to speak with you (the purchaser) either over the phone or in person. Try going to a Tionol or three and see whose pipes you like best. After all, you’re going to be the one to play them, might as well like them.
Hope that helps!

There’s a meeting in Glasgow in less than 2 weeks time:

You should see sets by at least a couple of makers.
I have nearly 50 uilleann pipers in my address book who are in Scotland, so send me a private message and I’ll put you in touch with those who are near you in central scotland.
Sets all vary SO MUCH that it is wise to see a fair selection before investing your hard-earned cash

You should do your best to take Boyd’s advice, that’s really the best way to start making up your mind.
Good luck!
