Rare Whistle Sighting in North Dakota

Where I’m from we have this annual Scandinavian festival called the Norsk Hostfest. It’s normally a bit of a snooze but this year there was a great Karelian band called Myllarit. Karelia is in NW Russia, right next to Finland and rich with Finnish culture.
Anyways the frontman would whip out a whistle now and again during the show. it sounded like a nice pennywhistle but I couldn’t tell much from the audience. After show I asked to have a look at them and he showed me a couple pennywhistle carved out of wood. He said they were Karelian flutes. I didn’t ask what key they were (a sign that I’m primarily a Highland piper and not a whistle player) but one was big and the other was small so presumably a D or C and a G or F.
Anyways, whistles are rare in these parts so it was cool to see one you would probably not see in most parts of the world.

They looked more like the pine flutes but the fipple looked more similar to a recorder and they didn’t have the bindings on them. That’s an interesting website. Did you already have that bookmarked?

No, actually I just did a search based upon your information. I had never heard of them and so was curious. Looks like I need a new whistle :slight_smile:
