The recent M & E R & R design has beginners like me wondering what’s the difference in playability and tone between the Rudall & Rose and the Pratten design? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Well, at least with the M&E instruments, the Rudall model is somewhat smaller in diameter than his standard instrument, which was great for someone like me with small hands. Also, having the two piece body instead of a one-piece give you much more flexibility in how you hold the instrument.
As far as playability, I’ve found that the Rudall style flutes I’ve played require somewhat less air than the Prattens, as well have an easier second octave. My two primary instruments are an antique 1857 Metzler, very similar to a Rudall design, and the M&E Rudall so I’m probably not the best person to comment on the subtle differences between Rudall and Pratten.
