Difference in a R&R style flute?

Just wondering, I’m getting ready to buy a polymer flute to play in the dust and muck at Renaissance Faires, and I have a question.

What is different about a Rose and Rudall styled flute? I’m specifically thinking about the M&E polymers, either the regular or the new R&R style.

Also, I have a smaller hand span. What might be the best poly flute for smaller hands?

Hi Aodhan,

The Rudall style flutes generally have smaller holes, two piece bodies, somewhat lower air requirements than the Pratten style. I have small hands and have no problem playing the M&E Rudall style polymer flute, highly recommend it for the purpose you described.

Cheers,

Michael

You might also condider a Dixon Polymer. My 14 year-old-daughter with normal girl-sized hands is able to play mine (she’s a Boehm fluter). They have a very nice tone and are darn-near indestructible. Also about half the price of the other polymers. I have one for sale if you’re interested.

I also like the Dixon. Played my friend’s
MandE today, one of the older ones,
and didn’t like it any better than
the Dixon.
Are the new jobbies a big improvement?
