Just heard from Blackie O’Connell that Sean Potts passed away. Great loss and my thoughts go out to his relatives and close friends.

I got the news a few hours ago, very sad. I first got to know Seán during his time as chairman of Na Piobairi Uilleann. More recently he was chairman of the Willie Clancy Summer School and we’d catch up anually. I always loved his delicate, clear whistle playing and he in turn was always very encouraging towards me. He organised a recording for RTE for me during a Willie week during the late eighties. He didn’t tell me where to meet Peter Browne though so I didn’t feel too embarrassed when I got distracted and didn’t do the gig. He did get me to play the Willie piping concert a few times, all on a few minutes notice, which was probably just as well. It allowed me to get it over with before the nerves kicked in.
Rest well Seán. My condolences to Bernie and the family.

Rest in peace, Mr. Potts. Thank you for the music.
Listened many a times of whistle tunes played by Seán Potts. What an example. My deepest condolences to everyone.
A true gentleman and certainly one of the driving forces in the resurgence of interest in ITM.
Article in the Irish Times with a link to the tribute that was broadcast on RTE last night.
Godspeed Sean, ye brought much joy to this world.
Sincere regrets,
Cayden
The Irish Times carried an obituary for Seán today.
Rest in peace. Probably my favoourite whistler, and certainly the one who inspired me to pick it up and have a go.
Can anyone please tell me the name of the first tune played by Sean Potts is in this clip?
Thanks in advance. More so, THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC SEAN POTTS!

According to the YT comments, it’s Gaftaí Baile Buí = The Gates of Ballybay [Yellow Town].
MTGuru,
Thanks much! I fell in love with it the moment I heard Sean Potts playing it. I have already started working on it and just wanted to know more about the tune and it’s origin.
Again, thanks for the assistance.
