Check this out! I had a poor woman from Jacksonville just call me all excited to get going on her new pipes when they finally arrive (she thinks)… she would up buying 1/2 a chanter I think…
Key of “D”, case, bag, bellows, chanter, drones & regulators. Used in the sound track to Titanic, softer than the highland pipes. Includes two sets of reeds.
Also called the > > Northumbrian Smallpipe> .
(emphasis added)
I mean “come on man, do a little research!!!” northumbrians indeed!
The images are clearly the pakistani-made rip off’s of kirk’s pipes… this poor woman has no idea what she has bought… she even said she was avoiding the pakistani stuff that friends had warned her about…
I’ve always responded with ‘Irish pipes’ which sometimes leads to confusion with Scotttish pipes and a short discussion along those lines but better than trying to explain ‘uilleann’.
The term “union” won’t help either, especially when south of the Mason-Dixon line… in fact, in some remote areas, you might get hanged just for using the term.
Has anyone tried to warn this poor woman about the trouble she has purchased?
Did you know that Uilleann Practice Pipes are Known as “Goose Pipes” and are preferred by some professional players due to the ability to be heard and in tune during sessions.
I will have the lady come down with her new pakistani chanter and its plastic reed, and i will simply demonstrate the difference bet. these sorts of wares and the real thing. I see that this Kyle music has a “100% return policy” and will advise accordingly.
““regulators” on the chanters, which play harmonies.” is one of my favorite lines from their website.
