Hi, I have never had a keyed flute, but I am curious. I play pipersgrip, and I was wondering how that would fair with a keyed flute set up for normal grip. Is there a difference? Would it be harder? Thank you.
You can get keyed flutes that are more friendly for pipers grip, like having an extra touch for the Bb key and moving the long F block so the index finger doesn’t hit.
As Jon said. But I suggest you to change to normal grip. It is possible, I did it…
I’ve been playing piper’s grip after starting trad hold. Yes, a RH Bb is a big plus, watch the list, they are out there.
Another issue for me is the G#, if it is too close in to the L3 hole it is hard to hit. I like the G# further out, or down, the flute. Look at the (beautiful) flutes in Holmes’ post https://forums.chiffandfipple.com/t/rudall-boosey-prattens-hawkes-eb-ormiston-bb-h-mcnaught/75384/1 in the second picture the Ormiston Bb has an angled G#, that style works perfectly for me using the LH pinky.
My flute teacher hits the G# with his L3, or ring finger, instead of pinky, while also covering the L3 hole, so the close-in key is fine for him. The motion is a dip of the finger/wrist. I can’t quite get it.

Not for me. I am double jointed and can’t move my fingers when they are bent. I can’t even play guitar ![]()
