I put my order in for an Overton Low D and I’m really excited. I’m kind of nervous in that they make them in batches. He then said he could call me and have me listen to a couple to see which one I prefered or I can email him and let him know the kind of characteristics I prefer. This is my first low D.
Can you guys give me some characteristics that you like in a Low D?
All I can come up with is that I want to play Irish Music with it and want to be able to fast tunes likes jigs and reels.
Congratulations on making a fine purchase… you won’t be disappointed!
All the characteristics I like in a low whistle, you’ll find in an Overton.
To be more specific, I like a nice resonant tone, strong bell note, easy 2nd octave, low air requirements, nice volume balance and crisp jumps between octaves.
I’d suggest you just let Colin do his thing and make you a whistle the way he normally does. If this is your first Overton, and first Low D, you might ask Colin to give you one of the easier blowing whistles from the batch, but other than that, don’t worry about it.
If you’re really concerned you can always take Colin up on his offer of the phone call, and listen to several whistles before making a choice - Heck, it’s worth it just to hear Colin play Colin is also very good at describing how each whistle plays. Beware though: If you’re like me you’ll end up wanting half the whistles he plays over the phone! This is how I ended up with two Low C whistles, hee hee
