Has anyone else gotten an email where the sender says INFO and the subject line is KEYBOARD? I deleted it because I’m sure it was some sort of virus but I was wondering if anyone else had gotten it or if any of you computer gurus out there know what it was about.
If not a virus, it was probably commercial spam, which I sometimes think is just as bad.
Hate to beat a dead horse, but if you don’t have a good virus checker, you really need it. I receive one or two a day but thanks to McAfee I still haven’t had a damaging infection.
Spam killers are also available, though I’m not yet sold on those. I did buy and am trying McAfee’s SpamKiller, but the trouble is that the filter terms catch one message I want for every 3 or 4 spams it catches. Haven’t yet decided whether the tradeoff is worth it.
Nothing salves a weary soul like a cheap whistle.

I’ve got the online McAfee Virus program and it seems to be working fine. But I get awfully nervous. I didn’t open the attachments with this email. If I had would the McAfee automatically stop things before damage was done?
I also have the Firewall program. I’ve given some thought to the Spamkiller program but I really haven’t got a large problem with that. Possibly because I’ve changed internet providers and email addresses a couple of times in the last year.
I know this is all off topic, far removed from whistles. But this is such a large collective of intelligent and helpful people. It seems like there isn’t any question that can’t be answered by one of our members.
Typically, what happens to me is that when downloading mail, McAfee is watching what flows through. When it spots a virus, it marks the file and pops up a dialogue box telling me what it caught giving me the option of cleaning, deleting or quarantining the file. Occasionally the first two options fail and I have to settle for quarantining the file, then going back and deleting it manually, a process for which they also provide very good directions.
The chance to open the file never arises.
You still need some self-protection instinct. It usually takes McAfee anything from a few hours to two days to put out upgrades for new viruses and its possible to get one during that interlude. Even when the virus checker clears it, if it seems out of character, such as a message from you or GM that purports to send a joke or cartoon or get rich scheme, I’ll write back to the “sender” to verify authenticity. It’s rare, but I have caught a couple that way before they can do any damage.

I’ve decided that matters of keeping our computers functioning properly can never be totally off-topic on an internet message board, in its own thread, anyway.
Where did your signature come from, by the way? I like it for some reason, but wonder what it means.
I got that keyboard message and also ditched it. Got another one that promised if I only ran the attached program, I would never ever get the Klez virus. Yeah, right.
I’m concerned, though, because I never used to get e-mail like this (I’m a very heavy e-mail user) and I’m suddenly getting a couple every day.
Yeah, and I’ve had two come to me that had very similar screen names of C&Fers. I wrote the C&F people whose names were used, and they hadn’t sent me anything.
I believe in being paranoid when it comes to email and potential viruses.
I tell everyone I know that:
I will delete any email (without opening any attachment) that is sent without some personalisation of the text message that would convince me of the identity of the sender.
even if I am convinced, I will not open .exe files. Other files, even .pps , wld be addressed on a case-by-case basis.
all emails from strange addys are deleted without opening.
I don’t use Outlook or O. Express for my mail program.
The local ISP I go through subscribes to something called Postini, a mail quarantine service that uses MacAfee to quarantine spam and virus infected emails before they get to people’s mailboxes on their ISP servers.
Postini has various settings for spam filters from lax to aggressive. Some spam still slips through to me and some legit messages get quarantined, but the service seems to be particularly effective in quarantining virus infected messages that have been directed at me often more than once a day.
I also use Norton’s Anti-virus utility and update the virus definitions at least once a week.
I always virus scan RW cdrom and floppy disks that have been in other people’s computers before I open them on mine. Email isn’t the only way to get infected…
About two years ago or so Don Henley from the eagles put out an album. Since he isn’t 17 and can’t shake his booty like Brittaney it didn’t go very far. But one of the singles was “There not here and there not coming”. Try to chase this song down and listen to it. I really feel it has a lot to say.
Nope. Decided to hold off a while. While I think they might be worth 40 bucks they sell for I’m sure they aren’t worth the 80 bucks they claim. If I wait long enough they may show up at Walmart.
