Practice sets ; Different parts or always as a set from one maker/brand?
Are bag and bellow and chanter always matching?.
Please let me know what you know about this issue.
Is it even possible to connect bag and bellows made for for example a Scottish bagpipe
to an uilleann chanter?
Bag, bellows, and chanter don’t have to match. You might have to make some adjustments in various parts for them to fit together, but there is no rule that they all have to be from the same maker. It’s very common to see bellows from a different maker than the rest of the set. Some bellows makers don’t make pipes, but supply bellows for all kinds of pipes. The bag itself doesn’t matter—people get what they like—but the blowpipe needs to fit the bellows and the chanter stock needs to fit the chanter cap. As you add drones and regulators it becomes a bit more important to have things match, though again parts from different makers can work if they match in terms of tone, air requirements and volume and can all fit in the same main stock. Aesthetically many players prefer the look (and sound) of a set made by one maker, but a “Frankenset” made from pieces from a variety makers is not unusual.
Probably not.
The air-intake on a highland pipes bag is positioned higher than the air-intake for uilleann pipes.
Also, GHB chanters are usually tied directly into the bag, where as uilleann pipes generally have a 3/8" stock/tenon. Apart from the connections being of a different size, the necks of the bags might differ in shape.
