Playing by ear (Newbie exercise)

A while back Mike a friend from Trad Connect kindly recorded ‘Oró Sé Do Bheath Abhaile’ to give me an idea as to how the tune would sound with ornamentation. As a newbie whistler my own ornamentation is slowly improving so I decided to give the tune a practice this evening. I haven’t played this tune in a month or 2 so I deliberately didn’t search out the notation instead I relied on my ears and listened to Mike playing and matched the general sound of the tune as he played. When I got it sort of sounding like the part on D whistle, I switch-arooed to the a Generation C whistle and then recorded this snippet after a little practice on my Generation Bb. Not a real test of ear playing by along way but it was fun and something to keep working on. Have a listen and comment if you wish

Playing By Ear (exercise)

I’m not familiar with the tune, but I like it.

As a newbie whistler my own ornamentation is slowly improving …

I know how that is.

Most of the things I play by ear aren’t ITM. The theme from Little House on the Prairie, Shake Your Booty, etc. :stuck_out_tongue:

Hi Mr Ed

It is a nice song as well.

Dubliners
Clancy brothers and Tommy Makem
Melanie O’Reilly - a more contemporary arrangement.
Sinéad O’ Connor giving it the full treament.

Jleo Fipple

If you have a liking for song airs how about Dulaman.

I like the sound of ‘The little House on the Prairie’ theme I would have been partial to the series many moons ago, ‘Shake Your Booty’ :open_mouth:

Very nice and new to me thanks for the introduction
