I’ve got one of the Yamaha fifes.
Fifes are side blown - ie, a small flute.
Most fifes have fingering that is the same as that of a whistle, however, the Yamaha fife is the exception. It has fingering which is very similar (but not exactly the same) as that of a C recorder.
I’ve found my Yamaha fife to be quite well made, very playable, and a useful addition to my bag of wind instruments.
Hello,
I have to say that I don’t like this instrument. I have one and don’t really know why I haven’t thrown it away. I guess it kinda looks cute, whenever I stumble across it. It has wings on the mouthpiece, like a Miramatsu flute, and has double holes for the last two fingers, like a recorder. But who wants to hear anything plastic played an octave higher than a flute, anyway? Sorry, I do not like tiny, plastic instruments.
If you want to know far more than everything you ever wanted to know about fifes, post to the flute board, and let David Migoya find your post. ![]()
