I’m looking for cd’s that prominently feature PIPING. I have ‘The Drones and the Chanters’; great old stuff. I would like to pick up a few ‘modern’ recordings but I don’t want something with flute, whistle, fiddle, concertina, etc, mingled in with the pipes. Style is unimportant really…
Go to the NPU website at http://www.pipers.ie and check out the list. Personal recommendations are Ronan Browne, Seamus Ennis and Willie Clancy. Good luck.

You might try the Leo Rickard CD “Pure Piping” or some Seamus Ennis.
If you absolutely have to have no other intruments than pipes, sorry, don’t know that many. If you can handle some guitar backup, try “The Humours Of Piping”, a CD featuring four different pipers.
I’ve purchased CD’s from Philippe Varlet at Celtic Grooves Imports a few times and have always received good service. I prefer getting his input rather than buying from a catalog.

One of Liam O’Flynn’s earlier CDs is pure (and perfect) solo piping.
I can also highly recommend the RTE CD of its archive recordings of Séamus Ennis, which is much better than some of the records he put out himself when he was sadly past his prime.
For perfect piping, though there is some accompaniment, you won’t get better than Brian McNamara’s solo album
I second the recommendation on Brian MacNamara…I also recommend the following:
Ronan Browne: The Wynd You Know
Paddy Keenan’s Brown Album
Jimmy O’Brien-Moran: Sean Reid’s Favourite
Pádraic Mac Mathúna: Blas na Meala
There is accompaniment on these albums, but plenty of solo stuff too
I highly recommend getting the following recordings as well…just cuz their not solo piping doesn’t mean they won’t rock you out:
Mícheál Ó Raghallaigh: The Nervous Man
This album is beyond unbelievable - concertina if you don’t know
Ronan Browne and Peter O’Loughlin: Touch Me If you Dare
This album is also beyond unbelievable…I waited, drooling, for it to come out for six months…got it the day Claddagh Records released it.
Peace,
Aaron Welsh
I know it has harp, flute, and whistle backups
but Sean Nua’s The Open Door is a great CD. It has two pipers playing very well together and is engineerd primarily to hear the pipes.I hate when I buy a piping album and all I can hear is some nutter and his keyboard. Davy Spillane’s Cd with Kevin Burke is also very good. They at least take turns.
