pipers on film

Anyone know of any visual recording of pipers either video or DVD as I like to look as well as hear?

There’s the three NPU teaching videos. I don’t think ther’re out on DVD yet, though I understand this is planned.

There’s Liam O’Flynn’s “Pipers Call” video from Tara.

There are a few others that “also” show some piping, but not dedicated to it. I can list what I have if you’re interested, e.g. Planxty’s Reunion DVD, but nothing else that is pure uilleann piping that I know of.

Try Sean Potts CD-Rom tutorial from http://www.madfortrad.com

Does the NPU videos have any performance footage ? I have one documentary on video based around the William Kennady festival and the Armagh pipers club .
I also had at one time a documentary about Liam O,Flynn in which he played his Froment B set and the Seamus Ennis set with Liam,s father on fiddle But my wife taped over it ( I,m trying to source another copy ) Also in that documentary there are sessions with Steve Cooney,Arty McGlynn Sean Keane and that galisian piper that I can never remember the name of ,and some of Liam,s work with various orchestra,s
If I don’t find another copy my wife has agreed to leave

Nope, the NPU video’s don’t really have any true performances in them, but Gay and Nollaigh do switch off showing more tunes at the end of the videos. Oh yeah, and thanks again Rory for that spare reed, it’s settled into the mid-coastal California climate and is playing well enough for some practicing on. The Galician piper your probably thinking of is Carlos Nunez.

All the best

There is also an Eric Rigler video (also a matching cd like for the piper’s call) which has many lovely Irish backdrops. The piper’s call video is extremely good and has some very nice interviews as well. I will try to find it (the igler video) to post the title unless someone else nows it off hand.

Pat McNulty has a longish video. There’s also a video of the 100th? celebration of the Cork Pipers Club with a concert of various pipers on. Both are of ‘amateur’ quality, but none the worse for it. Though I can’t vouch for the availability of either

Alan

Neil, is the Eric Rigler video you’re thinking of “Uilleann Pipes of Ireland.” If so I found a place that sells the video here:

Hope that helps ya guys.

I first saw the documentary programme on RTE/TG4 of Liam O’Flynn which was in Irish with subtitles in English.

Liam O’Flynn has a video called The piper’s call produced by Tara the which is the same as the RTE/TG4 documentary only all in English.

Another programme was on BBC SEAMUS HEANEY, LIAM O’FLYNN. The Poet And The Piper.

Didn’t Leo Rowsome appear in a few movies in his day. One was called “The Big Birthday” and I forget the other one. Also RTE did a documentry on pipe making with Eugene Lambe and Dan Down as part of a series called Hands. I haven’t a clue who may have a copy though.

Tommy

Rory, you are describing the Pipers Call video. Sorry the wife got to it.

Other video performance stuff:

  • “Come West Along the Road” - RTÉ production - has some Séamus Ennis playing on it
  • “To Erin and Back” - Full Circle Productions - has Michael Cooney playing in McGurk’s in St. Louis
  • “Music of Ireland - Volume 2” - Strausbagh Productions - has a very young looking Ronan Browne playing at Willie Week 1987
  • “The Pipes The Pipes Are Calling” - SeaBright Video - has Paddy Keenan and Jerry O’Sullivan live at North Hero, Vermont
“Boys of the Lough - in Concert” - Shanachie - has Christie O Leary on stage in 1992
  • “The Singing Chanter” - Piperama/I&B Revords - Pat McNulty’s self-produced video (did not win any MTV awards)

I cannot speak for availability. Search the web. There have also been a lot of tv shows in Ireland and England that some may have taped.

Also, check out the video clip section at Kerry Whistles: http://www.kerrywhistles.com/dl.php

I believe there was a film version of the Chieftains Water From the Well that has PAddy playing through several tunes. I also think I saw some special or two on PBS with Jerry O’Sullivan and perhaps the Chieftains as well, but this was a few years back, and I don’t recall names of the programs anymore.

There’s an RTE video that starts off with Liam O’Flynn playing 3-4 tunes, then Sean Og Potts playing and finally Paddy Keenan playing a set of tunes. forget the name just now. The video “Come west along the road” has besides Seamus Ennis singing, and later playing “The morning thrush”. Also has Willie Clancy playing a tune I think together with a fiddler. Also a young Finbar Furey. I believe there’s a even shot/a quick flash of Felix Doran in the beginning.

There’s one called “The Pipes Are Calling” that features various bagpipes. The UP segment features Finbar Furey. I think GHB player Dr. Angus MacDonald hosts this one.

Cheers,
Aaron
