I need some help from those of you who do your outside wood turning on a metal lathe with a toolpost. Can you give me some sort of idea of the shape of the turning tools, and grinding angles for these tools? I’m reluctant to use anything like the normal metal turning tools since the chip formation method for wood is different than for metal, and I would likely destroy some good wood in the experimentation process.
First of all, thanks for the reply.
My first inclination was to use the wood lathe for all turning since the shaping is much faster, and much easier to add decoration. Since I started though, I have seen chanters from several makers that show tell-tale regular marks, sort of “stair steps” that are indicative of someone machining a curved profile using succesive passes on a toolpost lathe. I think I’ll take your advice and use the wood lathe for the wood, and mountings, and leave the metal lathe for the brass bits.
