Piece for Solo Flute, Dead Can Dance

Does anybody know if Dead Can Dance’s “Piece for Solo Flute” as appears on their Toward the Within album can be found online, playable for whistle?

Also, does anybody know which band member plays the flute on this track?

It is Robert Perry, Brendan Perry’s brother, he also composed it. It is played on a Low D, recorded in 1994. Back then and from what I hear I am quite sure it is an Overton but it could be (due to the recording date) possibly be one of Cillian’s, too if he has been making his at that time already. Possibly try to contact him to see what he says it is. Here a little about what Robert is doing nowadays… http://www.dcdwithin.com/dcd.pl?caduceus=biography As Kila is mentioned, I highly recommend their work, Lemonade&Buns is our favorite album and would make its way on a desert island if we had to go there.

I love DCD, have all the albums…

Correction see here http://youtube.com/watch?v=kLblOSaUmWU Brian Howard Low D whistle  for another song of this album from the concert with Brendan on a Generation and his brother on a Howard… well, forgot they had a fat sound, too…

also see here http://youtube.com/profile_videos?user=anemetek&p=r for nearly the whole concert only not the Solo for Flute :frowning:

I liked this band, too. Although Toward the Within, to my ears, is clearly the best of the CDs. The only problem I had with this band is the absolute lack of any sense of humor.

I didn’t know there was a Kila/DCD connection. Neat. I saw Kila live
when they came to my college, what a great show! Rónán Ó Snodaigh
is an incredible Bodhranist (is that a word? It is now!).

Sorry, I can’t help much, Cran. Google, interestingly, only brings up
“lyrics” pages for the tune. Which, of course, are empty. I wonder if
you can find a lyrics page for Beethoven’s 5th? EDIT: Nope, but it did
return one for “A fifth of Beethoven” from Saturday Night Fever.
Apparantly the lyrics are “Da-da-da duuum”.

Thanks so much, everybody!

Dale, what do you mean about the humor?

I have seen them perform last year for a kind of re-union tour, unfortunately it meant only Brendan, Lisa and 2 more musicians, one on keyboard and one on percussion. It was accusticly very good, you could order a copy of the particular concert on CD which I did. This year she has been on a solo tour over here as well which I have been too… her voice is growing still but as you said it felt absolutely stiff, she is like a statue with little emotion shown, maybe she needs it to perform well.

The Spirit Chaser concert I had seen with them which was in 96 just before they split up I think, Ronan was on the percussion as well as his bother Ross (?) and on strings Lance Hogan. Stage was full with musicians and interesting instruments… I remember the percussionists being lively, it was her on the hammer dulcimer with her long pony tale in white medieval dress that made it kind of dramatic/heroic/static.

There are some beautiful recordings on cd from that tour (if you can grab them). Pity it seems to be a one-time reunion, as I hear nothing of Lisa and Brendan together, only the solowork of Lisa, which I find a little too depressing

Very, very somber. Nearly morbid. Take themselves way too seriously. Looks like they’re having NO fun.

I do not entirely agree, Dale. Lisa sings like an angel and is one of the best singers I’ve ever heard in my entire life, and the combination with the somewhat folkish Perry is one of its kind, very spiritual I find. Only the latest albums of Gerrard are depressing; I miss Perry’s influence in the music. Yeah yeah, here’s a fan talking who is still dying to see them alive.

I’m with Dale on this one. I have Spiritchaser, and it’s beautiful, but
it’s so morose that I just couldn’t get into any more of their stuff.

I like that.

Surprise, surprise.

I think I’m more of a Gerrard fan. I don’t care for Perry much. I only have their one album (Toward the Within) and various YouTube clippings, but I love her voice so much. The only other person who can make me cry as deeply just by singing is Sinéad O’Connor.

The stage atmosphere might also come from how other bands of this genre behave, compared to Qntl or other “gothic”-labled bands, DCD are quite light in that the dress code is not blackest black and only black. The audience here in Germany is at least half gothic, some old punks and most others also do not really look like they would go to a Howard Carpendale gig, too.

Cran, if you like Lisa’s singing, try to see if you find some sound samples of QntalI or Qntal II, these are from the early/mid 90s, I do not have their younger stuff. It is a little darker than some of the DCD work but what you might find interesting is that their female singer has a wonderful voice and she sings a lot in middle-old-german and sometimes I would think it sounds like latin but I would have to look that up again. It feels more like medieval music than DCD but not the usual 1-octave-jobs and as you like morbid, it sends some very nice shivers down your spine. http://www.qntal.de/english/index.html

Here you go, Cranberry. Print it using your favorite ABC editor, or plug it into the Concertina.net Tune-O-Tron to produce a downloadable 2-page PDF file.

The transcription is ad libidum, so the note values are all approximate. There are no bar lines, but each line of music is a separate phrase, with a small pause in between phrases. I made no attempt to transcribe ornaments, except mid-note separations. Grace notes indicate the separations, but not necessarily the actual ornaments (cuts, taps, etc.) or pitches.

I can’t say I much like this kind of thing, but different strokes. Enjoy!

Thank you all so much!

Old German sounds like Latin to me, too.
