After Mr Busman mentioned playing ITrad on a piccolo, I ordered one. It came two days ago and I’m having trouble with the embouchure. So I decided to try converting it to a chromatic whistle. So far the results are promising. I have some brass tubing that has the same ID as the piccolo, so I machined the end of a short piece to fit the piccolo’s tuning slide. I put a Feadog head on it and it plays in tune. The next step is to make a machined brass and Delrin headjoint for the piccolo, using the same mouthpiece design as my narrow bore brass whistles. I’ll keep you posted.
Great minds think alike, apparently.
You may have seen my query last week on the Flute forum, asking about piccolo bores …
As far as I’m concerned, if the Feadóg head works, it’s done. Can you post a clip? I’m interested in being able to adapt a favorite whistle head to the instrument, not being locked into a proprietary solution of a particular head and voicing.
Let us know how it goes!
What kind of piccolo are you converting?
It’s a Sky bought on eBay. I’ll try to get a clip up in a few days. I particularly like having a crisp D# for Crested Hens.
I’ve read awful things about Sky piccolos, but it may be worth for such an experiment. Looking forward to hear more about it.
If you get a chance, could you get a flute/piccolo player to try out that piccolo as-is?
That’s the quality level I was contemplating trying out. I don’t expect orchestral quality, but I’m curious if it’s, as they say, “close enough for folk music”…
