Photos from Friday Harbor!

Well, it’s over, alas. Yesterday brought farewell to the Friday Harbor Irish Music Camp at Friday Harbor, Washington. I must say, everyone who wasn’t there truly missed out on a fantastic week of Irish music. The instuctors were absolutely awesome, Catherine McEvoy, James Kelly, and John Williams among them. sigh Take me back! Unfortunately, this week hasn’t made me sick of Irish music, as I had hoped for a cure…no. It has instead fostered an unbridled addiction! So if you are considering attending such an event in the future, please be warned.

As a few people have mentioned in the Briton Plans to Invade America thread, I had the opportunity to meet a couple of Chiffers there, as well–MurphyStout (aka Jack) and Azalin. After debating with myself whether I ought to shamelessly deride them for the fun of it, I decided I had best just tell the truth, as boring as that might be. They are both excellent players that made me drool with jealousy, and are awesome people to be around. A good portion of my enjoyment was undoubtedly due to having such excellent friends with whom to share my time. cough Okay, I feel pained by sappiness, I need to say something derisive. Jack, while you play better than I could probably ever hope to, you really have to work on that three-point eye roll. You just haven’t achieved my level of technique. But that could be due to your maleness, which is a definite disadvantage. You have my deepest sympathies. Az, mayonnaise on a hot dog. That says it all.

Enough rambling! I have some pictures to show!

This is Az eating his detestable “ot dog” with mayonnaise on it

Oh yeah, now this is skill. They were playing the Connaughtman’s Rambles, I think. The B part proved especially challenging.

The camp was held at a marine research center and so was right next to the water. This was no more than a three minute walk from the dorms

This is a shot of a few of the buildings, although we didn’t have classes in these buildings. But this does give an idea of that the camp looked like. There were a few deer running around that were quite obviously very used to people and they could often be seen throughout the day munching on whatever.

Well, I think those are the pictures I have that are of the most interest. Unfortunately, I didn’t take many, nor did I take any of the instructors themselves because I forgot. :frowning: Anyway, I also want to thank Ava very much for allowing me to be one of those moochers to get a ride from her. Thanks so very much, and it was great to meet you all!! And I expect to be meeting more of you next year…

Nice stuff… Az is even more “charming” than I remembered. And Jack is… well… Jack. I wish I could have been there to join in the mayhem.

I’m curious, is that marine mammal research center the one run by Ken Balcomb and Diane Claridge, who study orcas in Friday Harbor and bottlenose dolphins in the Bahamas? If so, I did their dolphin survery with Earthwatch back in 1997. It would be very cool to run into them again… what a dream job!

Chris

Az, don’t let her get to you. There’s nothing wrong with Mayo on a dog.

thanks for sharing the pictures! makes this arizona desert rat long again for the big trees and greenery! but mayo on a hot dog? no, give me bbq sauce any day!

BBQ? Gross!

Better, Karina?

Jef

What are they snorting through those whistles, Karina?

Jef, that is the most disgusting hot dog I have ever seen. You might as well eat a salad. (Where’s the “barf” emoticon when you need it??)

Karina, I would say it looked like you had a ball, but I’m not so sure. But reading your after action report, it sounded like fun, and isn’t it beautiful up here in WA? I would save that pic of Jack and Az, I’m sure it can be used for blackmail someday.

I’ll save up my pennies for next year, maybe.

Cheryll (aka Numex) alerted me to this event and when I moved out here a local fluteplayer, Becky, told me about it as well. But alas I need to save my pennies for more vital things, food, utilities, etc. Maybe next year.

Cheers,
Aaron

Karina, thanks for making my hot-dog eating session your feature picture! Yeah! Really loved the week, I’m sure I’ll be back there at one point.

The marine lab is run by the University of Washington; I think Ken’s organization is headquartered somewhere else on the island.

Chris, I worked for Earthwatch for five years, back in the 1980s; I remember when we first accepted Ken’s orca project for funding!

I missed out on Friday Harbor this year but am hoping to get back next year, maybe with Az, we’ll see! I was there for one day last year but was sick with the flu and could barely play. Ugh.

Brad, next year you, Jack and I share a cabin! We need a fourth person though  Karina is a girl, can’t do. Maybe Eldarion if he wants to have the date of his life with Catherine

Thanks Karina for not posting any normal pictures of us… those would be real scarey. Thanks Ava for the lift and it’s too bad you couldn’t come to the camp as well, oh well maybe next year. Martin, wherever you are, thanks for making Ava take that shot of me sleeping on the floor, it was quite charming… I’m still waiting for that picture to turn up on the forum. Maybe I’ll get to swing by London in the near future so we can hang out again but it was great fun and I hope it’s not too long between the next visit.

Yeah, that was a fun week. I’m still not sure if I’ve catched up on sleep though. I’m deffinatly going again next year so me and Catherine can talk about our pending duet cd where she plays the piano and I play flute  I hope to see a few more chiffers involved next year. So Az, where next? Ireland or Montreal or what? I haven’t ran out of insults yet and I’m sure you haven’t either so we need to use them before we forget.

Hehe Chris, I was talking to a wicked banjo player by the name of Dave Cory who used to live in Boston and I asked him if he knew you. He said yeah and that you weren’t great but you played well enough to not get kicked out of the session! High praise indeed! Anyways, you should get in touch with me and az and we’ll plan out a summer trip or something. Hanging out with Az is great but we need someone else to get bored/annoyed with so email me you trustifairy!

HEHE!! Now just imagine leg hair like that all over a persons body except their head and you have Azalin!!

You know, I would have posted normal pictures, but I actually don’t have any…

And jef, that hot dog…I don’t know what to say…there are no words for it.

Walden, I have no clue what they were snorting, but whatever it was, they didn’t give me any, so I’m hurt.

I am a little sorry that I don’t have normal pictures to give a proper representation of their usual decency… just another reason to go back again next year!

Oh, Man. I used to love the days of Irish music workshops. In a few weeks I’ll just be an old married mommy. Sigh.

Ah, you bast%@$! I actually plan on being the first APE ever playing whistle the right way. Maybe one day.

Jack, the more I think of it, the more I think I would like to spend one month, like from november 1st to november 30, in Clare, around Ennis, for that festival, but also because 1) we get rid of the tourists 2) cheaper flights 3) we actually get to see some irish playing music. That week in Seattle was great, makes me think I prefer quieter, tourist free environment. Must be getting old. Anyway, would try to get intensive concertina lessons in november, etc. Also, my friend Kate is showing at the festival.

Heh heh, man - you guys crack me up, sounds like a great time.

Loren

I saw Dave in Seattle last Saturday playing with Hanz Araki. He was great on banjo and he probably performed the fastest guitar string replacement and tuning I’ve ever seen. He also took a Metloef bodhran to task. Is sounded like a rapper doing beat-box. Do Metloefs sound like that in general or was it perhaps Dave’s style?

Cheers,
Aaron
