Does anyone know if Patsy Hanley has produced an album? I’ve been listening to his stuff on youtube. Freakin’ awesome!!! I’d love to hear more if he has an album or something out.
I’ve heard a rumor that he’s making one, but I don’t know if it’s true.
I certainly hope it’s true. I’d love to hear more of his stuff. That’s some powerful flute playing, that is!
Check the Comhaltas Archive: http://comhaltasarchive.ie/search?tab=tracks&q=patsy+hanly
Thanks, Lorenzo!
He’s on the Roscommon compilation, isn’t he?
Yes (I’m a confirmed Patsy stalker).
FWIW, he also has a track or two on Conal O’Grada’s new tutor
, but I haven’t gotten that far in the CD yet. I’m still hanging out in “Cuts and Pats.”
Oooo!!! You have the new O’Grada book!?! I’d love to get a copy of that. How is it?

Get a copy! it worth every cent / penny!
I played at a session with him at the Ennis festival a month ago. He’s great ![]()
I’m still only in the early pages because I’m seriously trying to hammer things into my brain as I go … but truth be told, it’s the book I’ve been looking for all along. Not for beginners – he assumes you know the notes, can read notation, and have played enough to think cogently about things like breathing, phrasing, etc. – but this one’s an absolute essential as far as I’m concerned. My playing’s changing so fast it’s amazing, and it’s finally changing in the direction I want it to go. I’ve never been happy with my internal rhythm and phrasing, and I’ve always been crazy about Conal’s. No kidding, in this book he lays it all out for you. And he’s picked some terrific flute tunes for the exercises; I’m having a great time with it. If you want to play more like him, this book’ll show you how he does it. After that it’s up to you.
Wow, somebody just posted a whole bunch of vids in the last few days from a night at Hamrocks in Co. Roscommon from 1981. Type Patsy Hanly into YouTube search and they all come up. There’s some great stuff in there.
Edit- Better yet, here’s a link: http://www.youtube.com/user/bogroadghost/videos
Cheers,

Brilliant post Kirk. With Packie Duignan too! (and sounding better then ever, audio quality is clearer than on his recordings, the ones I have anyway)
I almost forgot this link: http://www.lafferty.ca/music/irish/flute-geezers/

Nice videos, not sure I agree on the quality being great but lovely to see, Pauline Hanly singing the Bogs of Shanaheever and all.
Patsy and Pauline Hanly do the occasional gig together, Patsy backs her singing on the whistle, when I heard them the first time I was particularly enthralled by their version of ‘Easter snow’.
Here’s another pic, this one taken at last year’s Willie Clancy singing recital, Patsy taking a break.

not sure I agree on the quality being great
Not great at all, but better than the recordings of Packie I have…
There are a few tracks by Patsy Hanly on some of the Comhaltas Tour LPs from the 1970s/ 1980s. I have a few recordings of him myself from a couple of trips he made to Scotland, and also from a Fleadh in the 1990s.
Patsy was special guest at Hammy’s Flute Gathering last year, and was interviewed by Conal O’Grada. During the course of that conversation, the recording of a CD was definitely mentioned as being planned, but as far as I know, nothing has been released yet.
I’ll have a listen to those recordings again to hear the quality. Unless there are any specific objections, I don’t mind sharing them.
Nice photos. But am I the only one who thinks Mr. Hanley bears a strong resemblance to

Best wishes.
Steve
