Collecting must have just got a hold on me again as I recently obtained two types of whistles I really haven’t played in years. Yes. I wanted one Chieftain Gold and one Goldie Overton, both soprano D. The Gold (brass) is a monster along the lines of one of those old Serpents - a big fat mass of brass and nothing else. Takes getting used to, especially in the upper ovtave and needs some warm up; big tone holes for a soprano D. Beautiful and substantial and I’m starting to get the hang of it.
The Overton, while thick walled, has more of the usual soprano D dimensions, and took just a few moments to warm up right out of the box. This may be the beginning of a beautiful friendship, Louie.
A word about Thom Larson of the Whistle Shop, from whence cometh the Overton. I haven’t dealt with Thom in a while simply because I have all the whistle related stuff I can stand (much of it from him in the early years of this obsession). Nonetheless, I called him about 6 months ago and asked for a Goldie D - he said he’d note it and let me know in about 6 months, the waiting period. I had frankly forgotten about it, but, probably 6 months to the day, Thom contacted me to advise that the whistle was now mine if I wanted it - this with no interim contact or badgering at all. A really good fellow to deal with.
Well, have to go now; I’m handcuffing myself to keep from typing in a PM or e-mail regarding that TW blackwood or the Busman macauba (or whatever)…aaarrrrrgh
