I am just sick with the news that Mícheál O’ Domhnaill passed away…yesterday I believe.
His music was a huge influence on me (Bothy Band, Skara Brae and more) and anyone who has heard Irish traditional music in the past 30 years.
There will be some reminiscing on KFAI radio (Century Song program) at 10:00 am CDT from his friend Dáithí Sproule. You can also stream it: www.kfai.org
I read the news about his death on another web site earlier today and could hardly believe it. Mícheál O’ Domhnaill’s playing had a profound effect on my musical life over the years and he’ll be missed.
That’s horrible news. Mícheal lived for many years here in Portland, Oregon and though I never met him, I heard so many stories about him from musicians around here that I sort of felt as if I knew him…I always wanted to meet him and ask him about his experiences crofting and song collecting on Skye…Come to think of it, I heard a few stories about him from people I met in Scotland as well. A terrific and sadly underappreciated singer and guitarist. He will very much be missed, especially around here.
