OT: Tell me the name of this Irish movie , pleeese..

This afternoon I watched a truly funny Irish movie on the WE channel, but, since I started watching it after the first few minutes were already shown, I have no idea of the name of it. Our tv guide does not list this channel so it’s no help.I watched the ending credits, but the title was not mentioned. I did find out it was entirely filmed in Ireland.I’m hoping some of you will know what it is if I give you the plot…

It takes place in a small town (I can’t remember which county, although they did mention it) on the coast of Ireland.

The movie begins with the local priest showing “religous” movies in the church so the locals have something to do, since they only have the pub for entertainment. By accident the movie"10" is sent instead of the “Ten Commandments”. Of course the priest stops the showing after one of the older women blocks the picture, declaring it “filth”…but…later that night the light from the screen can be seen through the church windows as he secretly sneaks a viewing!

The men there are bemoaning the lack of intresting local females and come up with a plan to advertise in a Miami newspaper for age 20-21 yr old American girls to come over to Ireland for a dance that is coming up in the community.

Of course the women of the town get wind of this .

The men keep watching the bus , expecting the american girls to arrive any day. In the meantime, it becomes obvious that several of these men and women of the town are really attracted to each other but don’t know how to proceed from there.

The pub owner is married but is a “wommanizer”. His wife is one of the desireable women of the town.

One main character is the owner of a butcher shop.I think his name was "Kerin? O’Donnal. He had the barber bleach his hair so he would look more appealing to the American girls that they advertised for. His brother is a sheep farmer on an island nearby.

I will go no further in case someone does know the name of this movie and someone else wants to see it. I want to rent it if possible since I have a feeling that it’s one of those that gets better with each viewing. Particularly since the accents were sometimes hard to understand.

It is Very funny, subtle humor for the most part, but , definately had me laughing out loud many times.

Does anyone out there know what movie this is?

American Women is the name you are looking for. Haven’t seen it yet myself but sounds like a goodie! Enjoy!

I’ve seen this film, it’s a good one, & came out after Waking Ned and Sing My Song when all things Irish had appeal.

I’m not sure Artguy has the right title (maybe it had another name in the UK?) but I can’t supply a better one. I remember the actor with the bleached hair was actually English, he’s been in quite a lot of stuff but his name escapes me. Maybe if I stop worrying it it’ll come.

That one: http://us.imdb.com/Title?0218112 ?

Eating my words, that’s the one!

“American Women” is the US release title. The actual title is “The Closer You Get.” Funny movie!
Cheers,
Aaron
