I could post this on the flute board, and probably will if my question lies unanswered but I thought theres probably enough flutists around…
I was looking at the flutes over at www.sunreed.com and was curious if anyone had any experience with them. Are they usable for trad? General comments are good too. Thanks
David
Have you tried a search? I believe they’ve been
discussed on the fluteboard. Best
Zachiah at Sunreed has been making flutes for a long time. Last I remember they were mostly bamboo.
What Jim says; try a search; Sunreed flutes have been discussed here previously (including a couple of posts by yours truly).

I have searched the board and found some good information, thanks everyone who has posted in the past
Well let me jump in here David; I have two of his flutes, a high Bb and a low D. They are exalent flutes. The Bb is great fun to play and puts any Bb whistle to shame. Very complex, lots of harmonics and yet crystal clear if you want it to be. The tuning is dead on( I went for the pro model) and its good looking to boot. The D is wounderful. Not for the faint of heart or the small fingered. The finger stretch is huge, infact I have to use my pinky for the low D which is not hard to get used to. The tone is dark and somber, easy secound octive and powerful bell note. Not a biggeners flute but not hard to play either. These are quality flutes and the workmanship is first rate. The bamboo he uses is very thick walled and if I had to defend myself in a pub brawl the D would serve well. Zachiah is an easy guy to talk to so don`t hesatate to tell him what you are looking for. I rate his flutes pretty high. No they are not Olwells but close to the same level of proffesionalism.

Well, maybe it would help if I told people what I’m looking for.
I am slowly (but surely) getting my sister hooked into Itrad flute and have been looking for a good quality bamboo flute to get her started (we are both pretty blah about pvc). She plays piano so she’s developed a good reach (handstretch is 9 keys). So, I was looking at sunreed, my search lead me to tallgrasswinds (jessieK’s suggestion via a search) and the ellusive olwell (which is unavaible?) so I’m still bouncing between sunreed and tallgrass so any advice would be most appreciated.

Hmm…not even 9 key finger stretch would be able to manage That Hideous Stretch on a Sunreed (I’m talking about the distance betwen the D and E only), and as Blackbeer pointed out, almost everyone uses his/her pinky on the bell note on Z’s low D bamboo flutes. It feels strange at first but eventually one gets used to it anyway, so that’s not a terribly fearsome issue. BTW, my pinky used to get ‘stuck’ in the hole, but not anymore.
Tallgrass seems to be getting good reviews as well. How about the stretch, ds anyone know?
