OT: I've given up on Microsoft and turned to whistlers

I’ve been over and over microsoft.com trying to solve this simple problem.

I have two computers with Windows 98, NOT the 98 Second Edition. I now need the Second Edition. At one time, it seems, Microsoft sold a CD-ROM to upgrade from 98 to 98 SE. But I can find no evidence anywhere that this is still available. I don’t want to upgrade to ME or to XP.

Any ideas?

Hi Dale,
I do not know if it is of any help for you. I buy a lot of software I need on ebay as usually there are the English language versions available. In Germany, computer shops only sell German language versions. I checked ebay.com just now and there are “Windows 98 SE Upgrades” available. Just use the string for searching in the start page and a few will come up.

Good luck
Brigitte

Hi, Dale. I can absolutely guarantee you don’t want ME, but the new XP is pretty durn good in the “Home” edition, and downright solid in the “Pro”. I’ve been running Windows 2000 Professional and Server pretty much ever since it came out, and XP was the only one that convinced me to switch over. The “Home” edition can still run all the graphics and games of 98/98SE, while adding the stability of Win2K. And it doesn’t have the security holes of either 98 edition. It’s only a hundred bucks, and deeply discounted some places. I’d strongly suggest you give it a try.
Best,
Bill Whedon

Brigitte–Thanks very much. Great suggestion.

Bill–Thank you, too. I’ve used XP at the office and I like it. But, both of these computers have Pentium II processors and run at 350 mhz or so. Even though Microsoft says that is enough, several independent reviewers have said it is iffy. I’ll research that more thoroughly, though, and I appreciate the excellent suggestion.

Dale

Be very cautious of upgrading to XP if your hardware is a year or older. Very little hardware support is backwards compatible. M$'s concession to the hardware vendors to guarantee hardware sales… Most peripherals over a year require upgrades and/or new models…

That said, XP-Pro is much more stable than '98. 2000-server and XP-Pro are almost as solid as a decent version of Linux.

As of just last week, the local Sam’s Club was still selling upgrade CD’s for Windows 98SE.

As for XP, it has plusses and minuses. The product activation is a real minus and a very serious security concern. Also being based on an NT kernel means much higher system overhead, and overall a more sluggish and less responsive computer.

There does seem to be some additional stability, but don’t believe the hype about XP not crashing: it crashes on a fairly regular basis. I still recommend rebooting at least weekly; daily if you handle critical data, and make regular backups your best friend.

If you want real stability and no Big Brother tracking system in place, give Linux a shot. You also get the pride of using a real operating system that wasn’t designed with idiots in mind.

Best wishes,

–James

The best advice is to toss the PC and get a Mac… it’s rock solid and works like a Copeland.

Conical bore ??

Thanks. I’ve NEVER heard a Mac owner give THAT advice before. Never! SO, I’ll grab up a couple of grand and run out tonight and make that purchase.

Sorry, sarcasm is not attractive, is it?

The Windows 98 SE Upgrade is supposed to upgrade from Win 3.1, 3.11, 95 and 98. It will also reload 98 SE in case of problems.

You can rely on Microsoft product if it don’t have a command line interface, how else can you fix it?

I refuse to put XP on my computer. When I bought a new computer for work, I discovered that the vendor at first was putting XP on machines but then change to make it a choice, a lot of people specifically request Win 98 SE.

At that, what would a whistle be like if it were made by Microsoft? The Bill Gates whistle.

my brother has a pentium II and he runs microsoft NT 4.0

It works, but I can’t say I’d recommend it as anything but a last resort, as it doesn’t run most games(it doesn’t support directx for some stupid reason), and it tends to crash and cause IE to freeze up a lot.

My faith in Microsoft has been restored.

A friend in the organization is working the problem!

Dale

I have windows 98 SE, if you want it let me know!

And it’s Unix now, too.
However, you’re doomed to still get some Crimosoft-wear, since so many people insist on writingf/reading only Office files, and since Netscape became a turkey :frowning:

Yes, but Mozilla makes a very good browser/email package, and Star Office is about 98% compatible with Microsoft Office, and both programs are free, open source.

LOL! I like Dale just fine!

He has always seemed someone very intelligent and quick-witted; just the kind of person who doesn’t need to be limited to using Windows.

Still, to each their own, I suppose. If you enjoy computing to the lowest common denominator, Windows is great.

That was flamebait, by the way, and written very tongue-in-cheek.

More seriously, a better reason to put up with Windows is for the games it runs. These days with Open Office, Mozilla, Gnome, and KDE, there is no reason for anyone to be afraid of Linux. It can be just as “point-and-click-lead-me-by-the-hand-mommy-I’m-scared” as you’d like.

Oh, I know I’m gonna get so flamed for this post!!!

Best to all, even Micro$oft users,
