Did you know that Bob Keeshan was a sergeant on Iwo Jima, and reportedly stood exposed to draw the fire away from his troops as they tried to advance? No kidding. I read an exerpted interview about this yesterday (I think it was from a Johnny Carson show), and the fellow regarded Bob as hero.
Nano, perhaps you read that interview in this thread? Page back.
I didn’t realize Kangaroo ran so long; 30 years on CBS, and another six on PBS? Wowie.
I do remember how upset I was when I found out he (the Cap’n) didn’t wait for me to come back if I turned the TV off during his show.
Remember when Mr. Hooper died? Oh, and remember when they decided (how I abhor political correctness in all its incarnations) that Big Bird’s imaginary friend, Mr. Snuffleupagus, was to become visible to everyone on Sesame Street? Lest children learn that adults won’t believe them when they tell the truth? I think that single change ruined the show.
You don’t think Barney talks to kiddie-widdies wike deywre idiots!
No you don’t! No you don’t!
A wugywugywooo! A wugywugywoo!
How’s this for macabre: a couple of years ago, I went to a patient room in a pediatric hospital to aid in resuscitating a child. Well, this kid was (in the I’m-telling-a-story sense, not the child-no-longer-with-us sense) a big Barney fan, and had a few (like a million) in his bed. We tossed some of them away, and the LOUDEST chorus of “I LOVE YOU! YOU LOVE ME!” almost drowned out what we were trying to say to each other.
I grew up with him in the 50’s as well. How many of you knew that he was also “Clairabell” the clown on the Howdy Doody Show? He is a man I will allways honor in my heart. Rest in peace Capt.
