I don’t know if this means anything to anybody, but I just heard that the great Cuban musician Compay Segundo has died, aged 95. Terrible loss, I think.
Thanks for the info. I learned of him through his playing with the Buena Vista Social Club.
Edited to add that I agree it’s a real loss. I enjoyed his music
Tom
I remember the Buena Vista Social Club special on TV; I loved it. I hope that the younger generation has a desire to further the Cuban tradition; it’s beautiful stuff.
Very unique singing technique, as well as guitar style. Ry Cooder was interviewed on NPR’s “All Things Considered” a few days ago. In his opinion, this was a loss that would never be replaced.
Yesterday, the Franco-German TV channel “Arte” deprogrammed its scheduled evening movie. Instead, they broadcasted Wim Wenders’ “Buena Vista Social Club”. Nice touch.
Compay–salud!
If only he hadn’t smoked all those damned cigars he mightn’t have died so young!
Yeah, but you forgot he started litting up his grandma’s cigars when he was five, so he had gradual training. This the secret of his vocal technique ? ![]()
What a superb artist! Last time I saw him he was a dapper 94 and looked like he could go on for a few more years… He obviously decided not to.
A sad loss. Nice to see that so many others know and like his music too.
