A British HURRAH! for our canny Scottish lasses who won British Gold at the Winter Olympics for the first time in 18 years.
(Ever notice how it’s British if they win, but Scottish if they lose? We English have a lot to be ashamed of!)
Cees, I hope you got to see some Brit celebrations there in Salt Lake City! We don’t get much snow & ice in th UK, so we’re lucky to have somethign to celebrate - edge of chair stuff it was too.
Congrats indeeed. I thought curling on TV was some kind of joke (what could be worse than darts on TV?). But I tuned in and out several times last night, and as the suspense mounted I got so hooked in the whole emotional side of it that the final throw brought tears of joy to my eyes on behalf of the Scottish ladies.
By the way, we Irish are well-used to the “British as long as they’re winning” syndrome among BBC commentators - which continued for at least half a century after Ireland (or most of it!) left the UK. But we got our revenge: we gave you Terry Wogan (who even says “we” when he’s referring to the UK entrants in the Eurovision song contest)!
Martin,
Congratulations! That’s great. Unfortunately NBC only gives us four hours of Olympic coverage every night and nothing during the day, so we can only see what they choose to show us and last night it was the men’s Giant Slalom ski races and the women’s figure skating final (way to go, Sarah Hughes! She did the performance of her life!). They didn’t show anything else. I don’t understand why they don’t show other stuff during the day–I sure would have liked to watch it.
As far as British celebrations go, since I live 20 minutes from downtown Salt Lake City I try to get down there when I can, but I don’t hear much about any particular country’s public or private celebrations, only performances, etc. that are free to the public. I certainly do wish I was more in the know and also wish I could afford to go to some event–ANY event–after all, when will the Olympics be right on my back door again? Probably not again in my lifetime!
Anyway, I’ll keep my eyes and ears open and hopefully get to see some fun stuff tomorrow, the last day before closing ceremonies. We’re going downtown again tonight to see a local Irish ceili band perform on the main stage at Washington Square.
Well, as a self-exiled Brit, I’m obviously proud of the lasses. But, it’s no surprise to me that they won the curling event. I mean, British hairdressers are the best in the world!
You know, the Winter Olympics haven’t been the same since Eddy the Eagle retired. Congratulations, Scotland!!! (yes, yes, and the rest of Britain, too )
Congratulations to our British cousins on the end of a long drought. I was able to see the Britain/Switzerland match and have to admit that curling ‘might’ be at least a little more exciting than watching grass grow .
Yea if the irish and scotts were more appreciated over there they wouldn’t have had to come here and make it the greatest country in the world. (My grandparents came from Dunfermline)
If you have cable or satelite they were showing the minor stuff on cnbc or msnbc during the day. I hope the world got a good impression of us through the olympics (although I just got through watching KISS do a number in full makeup in the closing ceremonies)
